Italian for “the sweet life,” La Dolce Vita (1960) is Federico Fellini’s lush and intoxicating masterpiece on life, love, decadence and excess. Marcello Mastroianni plays a tabloid journalist who spends a week in Rome chasing an elusive starlet played by Anita Ekberg, while being easily distracted by women in his own life.
Subject to widespread censorship, the film was condemned by the Vatican newspape...r L’Osservatore in 1960, and banned in Spain until 1975 after the death of Franco.
