Media arts showcase at the Loews

The New Jersey City University Media Arts Department will hold its 31st annual “Media Arts Department Showcase” of film, video, and digital media on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 7:00 p.m., at the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre, 54 Journal Square in Jersey City.

NJCU’s “Media Arts Department Showcase” will also feature the presentation of one or more Dr. Joseph Drew Awards for Excellence in Media Production to NJCU senior(s) nominated by a jury of NJCU media arts faculty. Named in memory of the beloved professor of media arts and former academic vice president who taught film studies, philosophy, and religion before his death in 2003, the prestigious award recognizes strong academic standing, the production of a body of outstanding work; and service to NJCU’s Media Arts Department.

A donation of $3.00 to benefit the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre is suggested. The reduced parking rate of $3.50 will be available at the Square Ramp Parking Garage located behind the theatre on Magnolia Avenue.

A gala after-party will be held at Sanai’s Restaurant and Lounge on 510 Summit Ave. in Journal Square immediately following the screening. Sanai’s is a one block walk from The Loew’s. Free parking is available for Sanai’s in a lot directly next to the restaurant.

This has been a banner year for NJCU Media Arts production students. Works produced from 2012 through 2013 have been screened at numerous arts venues in Hudson County, have won top prizes at the NJ Young Film and Videomakers’ Festival, and at the Ridgewood Guild Film Festival.

NJCU’s Media Arts Department is also the home of the Urban Image Media Collective, which provides opportunities for NJCU media artists to screen their work at such prestigious locations as the Hoboken Historical Museum, the Jersey City public library system, local arts venues and festivals, and NJ City University.

Built at what was then the impressive cost of $2 million and called “the most lavish temple of entertainment in New Jersey,” the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre opened on September 28, 1929. As the Theatre fell into decline, a determined group of residents set out to save the historic landmark. The initial band of preservationists has grown into an organization called Friends of the Loew’s.

For further information call the NJCU Media Arts Department at (201) 200-3494.
