"Brooklyn Heights" Artist Talk
Saturday, June 25th, 2011
12 Noon to 3 PM at the The Distillery Gallery & Artspace
7 Hutton Street, Jersey City, NJ
Exhibition Dates -- June 3 to July 2, 2011
Come out and attend an Artist Talk, in conjunction with our "Brooklyn Heights" exhibition at the Distillery Gallery & Artspace. Listen to some of the artists from this exhibit discuss their unique experiences working in the Heights and Brooklyn, including thoughts on mediums used, methods and artwork.
The "Brooklyn Heights" exhibit features work from artists residing or working in an art studio in Brooklyn or Jersey City Heights. Although it’s certainly New York, Brooklyn has it’s own culture, a distinct art scene and a flavor all its own. The Heights is a district at the end of Jersey City that overlooks Hoboken and has been described as the new Brooklyn because it is a diverse community being transformed by the energy of it’s residents both old and new. Artists have always been at the heart of community change. The title of this show is a play on words that seeks to highlight and build a bridge between Brooklyn and the Heights -- let’s hang at the Distillery.

JCVillage: Embankment
VOTE EMBANKMENT!
Help the Embankment Preservation Coalition win up to $25,000 in the National Trust for Historic Preservation “This Place Matters” Community Challenge. The Trust selected the Coalition from 250 entrants to compete with 99 others in the challenge. Now It’s Up to You! As of this weekend, we rank #10 out of 100 participants.
The Coalition works to preserve a massive stone structure, one of the last remnants of the Pennsylvania Railroad Harsimus Branch, for use as a habitat-oriented park and segment of the East Coast Greenway biking and walking trail from Maine to Florida. For more than one hundred years, the Embankment and a predecessor elevated structure carried the PRR’s freightway to the Hudson River, contributing to the growth of the Port of New York and New Jersey. Preservation of the transportation corridor is essential to good public access to the Hudson River from Downtown Jersey City. The Embankment has long formed the backdrop to festivals and parades, including those of Holy Rosary Church, the oldest Italian parish in the state, and St. Anthony’s, the oldest Polish parish, which is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
