JCAS presents “The Circle” (2010) June 12, 7.30 - 10.30
Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2000 Venice International Film Festival, 'The Circle' by Jafar Panahi is a politically controversial and critically acclaimed addition to Iran's New Wave movement of the past decade. 'The Circle' questions current restrictions on women's freedoms in Iran by depicting three female characters on the day of their release from prison encountering significant obstacles... in moving forward without being re-arrested.
Director Jafar Panahi has been serving a 6-year jail sentence since Dec. 20, 2010, on charges of propaganda for his body of films. The Iranian goverment has also issued him a 20-year ban from making any more movies, screenplays, or giving interviews to domestic and foreign media. The campaign for Panahi's release from prison has been undertaken by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International.
Film starts at 7:30, discussion to follow.
FREE admission; $5 donation suggested.

Hello Walkers
Please plan to join the Board of the Hudson River Waterfront Conservancy on Sunday June 12th for our second Walk the Walkway tour of 2011 in downtown Jersey City. Our first tour on May 1 was a spectacular walk through Liberty State Park. This one will be even better as we view Lower Manhattan from downtown Jersey City.
