at the warehouse cafe, 140 Bay street, friday july 9, 8 - 11 pm
2009 Cannes-presented short film, Sabongero, by director, Janice Y. Perez, will be screened at the WAREHOUSE Cafe. Sabongero is a Cebuano word for cockfighter.
Cockfighting is a sport (illegal in certain countries but not in the Philippines) of setting two cocks to fight each other. Fighting cocks often have had their legs fitted with metal spurs.
The screening is dedicated to my father, an avid sabongero. We hope that this short film underscores the myriad contradictions that sabong (cockfighting) brought to my family and continues to bring to many other Filipino families today.
This short film is one of few Filipino films where the language/dialect Cebuano is spoken. Ms. Perez will be at this screening and will have a brief discussion after the showing.
