About AISHIA SHANDRISE MARTINEZ
Aishia Shandrise Martinez is a musician, poet and memoirist born in Jersey City, New Jersey to parents of Puerto Rican descent. Brought up in a large close knit family Aishia was surrounded by a strong sense of identity, culture, and music. The mix of American and Latino influences has had a definite affect on both the aim of Aishia’s writing and the style and tone of her singing.
She gained her first poetic acclaim at age 14, receiving an honorable mention award in the National High School Poetry contest. Since then she has been published in two literary magazines (Chimera and The Idiom) and her work is also slated to appear in the book Paths a book of collected writings that will be published in the spring of 2011 by New Jersey City University, where Aishia is currently a sophomore. She has performed at her poetry at The Bowery Poetry Club, was a featured musical performer on the main stage at Jersey City’s Pride Festival 2009, and has read her memoirs in venues throughout Hoboken and Jersey City.
