Hamilton Park Dog Runs Group:

We have a Hamilton Park Dog Runs Group.  This group is formed to give a voice to all dog owners who use Hamilton Park.  We will discuss issues, maintenance procedures, and have a contact liaison who will report concerns to the HPNA and DPW.
On April 6, 2011, both the large and small dog runs were tilled, aerated, and zeolite was mixed in (volcanic rock used in cat liter) for odor. The dog runs will be on the same DPW maintenance schedule as Van Vorst Park.
The dog runs have rakes, shovels, and large garbage cans inside the runs supplied by the HPNA.  It will take the cooperation of all to keep our park clean and safe.

Hamilton Park Green groups

Hamilton Park Clean Up Group:

We have a Hamilton Park Volunteer Clean Up Group who cleans up the park litter and rubbish throughout the entire park, empties the overflowing garbage cans, and takes all the bags to the curb for pick up.
These volunteers are the reason why our park looks so clean and beautiful and litter free!  They have a three person crew per shift, and it takes them about a half hour to do the park. They are supplied the garbage bags by the city.  If you would like to join this group, please email:

Hamilton Park Greens Group:

We have a Hamilton Park Volunteer Greens Group who work in the mulched beds in the park dead heading the flowers, pulling out weeds, trimming the bushes, pruning the trees, maintain the cleanliness of our beautiful large water fountain at the entrance to the park at 8th & Jersey, and anything else that is needed.  They are supplied the garbage bags and gardening tools by the city.  If you would like to join this group, please email:

With age I, like most, have come to realize that humans are what create this chaos, and they are more animal then animals. Most [humans] should be caged up, so I paint the animal as a reflection of ourselves, our cruelty to each other and other animals, and our near descent to a world that does not support true free expression. Through my work I try to deconstruct America and the rest of the world through the guise of animals. It addresses current events, stereotypes, and underlying threads of drugs, sex, and corruption that underpin American society, to which the text provides clues to content and interpretation.

We are moving the JC Slam for ONE WEEK to Downtown Live at the infamous 143 Building on Christopher Columbus Drive. Downtown Live is the sister venue to our home Grassroots Community Space.

To have JC Slam at this legendary building is a real honor. 143 has housed the some of Jersey City's best art openings, dance partie...s, poetry readings, rock shows, workshops and performances this city has ever seen!

Downtown Live is convenient to get to being about a block away from the Grove Street PATH and it has plenty of evening parking with a parking lot next to the building which is FREE in the evening.

The JC Slam is the only PSI sanctioned and nationally recognized slam in North Jersey. That means the stakes are high because we are trying to find out who will represent Jersey City at the 2011 National Poetry Slam.

There is a brief OPEN-MIC before the slam that not only welcomes aspiring poets but MUSICIANS AND COMICS AS WELL.

NTEL-  I am a self-taught practitioner of fine art for approximately 20 years, and a self-guided participant of graffiti and street art for approximately 13 years.  I have traveled extensively for first 25 years of my life, experiencing many different cultures, styles, ideas, and regions of the world.  All, of which, come together in my artwork.  I am constantly striving to truly bridge the gap between "fine" art and "street" art.  Blatantly evident in my works, displaying contemporary touches of abstract expressionism, modern design, as well as found objects, unique figures, and subtle graffiti accents. 
THEN ONE-  I am an artist, illustrator, muralist and designer I use bold colors and imagery to create pieces of art that represent a visual manifestation of my feelings and the world that surrounds me. My work explores my heritage as well as my background as an artist of the street and how it fits as well as clashes within today's society. Though cultures may clash, my goal is to create pieces of art that can broaden the visual horizons of gallery owners and curators as well as art collectors to see that street-art and graffiti is a legitimate art form. The Contemporary art movement was the last major movement in art and I believe that graffiti and street art will be recognized as the next big movement. Ultimately I want to leave my mark in this new movement that is influencing my entire generation.




Unzipped represents us opening a side of us that is not normally seen. Our work in this show is a reflection of our experiences, how we portray the world that surrounds us. The collaborative installation will quite literally unzip the walls of the gallery with a brightly painted mural directly onto the walls of the gallery. This in a sense is a tribute to our roots as graffiti artists showing the side of us that is not traditionally seen on gallery walls. In Unzipped the works featured will mainly be paintings on canvas as well as drawings and sculpture.

Be/Leave is a dialogue about who we become when we travel. In this photo essay, two activists who traveled alone outside the US contemplate their role in the world as organizers and their role in their own individual lives.

Tracey Noelle Luz is the director of They Will be Heard, the first feature length film on heavy metal in Cuba. She is also a photographer specializing in documentary and portraits.

Lillian Ribeiro is the director of performance and film at _gaia and also skates for Garden State Rollergirls.

Private eyes, a play, J City theater

J CITY Theater announces the opening of their new production: Private Eyes by
Steven Dietz.

Private Eyes is a “relationship thriller” - a comedy of suspicion in which
nothing is quite what it seems.  Matthew’s wife is having an affair with Adrian,
a British theater director.  Or perhaps the affair is part of the play being
rehearsed.  Or perhaps Matthew has imagined all of it simply to have something
to report to Frank, his therapist.  The audience bares witness to the
characters’ delicious deceptions and are ultimately the detectives - the real
private eyes, who search for clues to Dietz’s laugh out loud comedy of surprise
and misdirection. 


With dialogue that snaps and crackles with biting humor, Dietz explores
characters who continually try to tell the truth - but in the end learn the
value of “the comforting white lie”.   Secrecy and deception hide the twin
fevers of passion and suspicion.  To borrow a phrase, Private Eyes is a “riddle
wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma”.

Wonder Women

Even today women remain on the fringes of the art world. Gagosian is 84 percent men, which means its artists include only 16 percent women! In September of 2006 Jerry Saltz reported that the MOMA’s permanent collection, its 4th and 5th floor galleries, only included 5 percent women, and although he has not released more current data, I imagine it has not changed.

Six years ago, I began a program very close to my heart called Wonder Women. As part of _gaia's mission I wanted to create a successful annual residency that was designed to provide a creative and supportive environment for young emerging women artists.  The Wonder Women residency, now in its 6th year, has brought together yet again a dynamic group of 10 artists. This year the residency theme has asked the artists to address the changing landscape of news, aptly titled: New News is Old News.

For the first time, _gaia is fundraising: to cover the organization and the artists'  overhead…AND the big news, to take the residency to Cyprus! We have been invited to host an intensive 2-week residency in Nicosia.
