JC Poetry Slam

saturday, july 23, 8pm - midnight
FIRE IT UP! It's what we have been waiting for! The 2011 Jersey City Slam Team is going to unleash their talent for a special preview of what Boston has in store for them this year! Come out and support our team as they take down teams from New York, Philly and New Jersey for the title of best in the region!

Because we are expecting everyone to come out and support the team we are moving this slam to a special night for this... week only! SATURDAY, JULY 23 doors will open at 8:00 pm! We will also be showcasing the best of the best at ART HOUSE PRODUCTIONS, located at 1 McWilliams Place (right by Hamilton Park!).

Snacks, beverages and wonderful baked treats will be provided by Judy's Goodies!

Admission will be $5. As always, all proceeds go towards the JC Slam fund and sending our team to Boston where they will be representing us in the 2011 National Poetry Slam this August!

Thank you to everyone who has continued to be a part of the slam during the summer. We are a community of writers, performers, artists, and in the end, family. Let's show the visiting team what it is like to be from Jersey City! Get ready to FIRE IT UP!

The Monologue Slam, poetry slam

The JC slam opens its curtains to present "THE MONOLOGUE SLAM." Brush off those accents, take out that poem that always sounded more like a story anyway and get your character on for this original monologue challenge. We welcome any non-original monologues as special additions to our pre-show regularly scheduled open mic. Surprise guest judges will be scoring the competitors and our very own Scripted will be gracing us with his ...hosting presence. Doors open at 8 p.m. and sign-up is first come, first perform.

You've made an excellent choice. You will be experiencing live performance in a whole new light and it's only a measly $5!

Itching to open mic?
Way to share your gift! We'll be having a mixed open mic before the competition begins. We welcome all of the usual spoken word/music/comedy and urge all the actors in the group to bring out three-minute non-original monologues!

Ready to perform your own monologue?
Awesome! Your time limit is 5 minutes with a 30-second grace period where points will not be deducted. Memorization is encouraged, but not mandatory, and you want to come with two different monologues ready to go. The first round is with 6 competitors and the top 3 will advance to see who gets the gold through bronze.

Fasten your seat belt, it's going to be a bumpy and glorious ride!

There will be a brief open mic before the slam. All are welcome-- poets, musicians, comedians, sword swallowers, you name it!

Cover $5 / $3 Students

There is a brief OPEN-MIC before the slam that not only welcomes aspiring poets but MUSICIANS AND COMICS AS WELL.

JC Slam

We are moving the JC Slam for ONE WEEK to Downtown Live at the infamous 143 Building on Christopher Columbus Drive. Downtown Live is the sister venue to our home Grassroots Community Space.

To have JC Slam at this legendary building is a real honor. 143 has housed the some of Jersey City's best art openings, dance partie...s, poetry readings, rock shows, workshops and performances this city has ever seen!

Downtown Live is convenient to get to being about a block away from the Grove Street PATH and it has plenty of evening parking with a parking lot next to the building which is FREE in the evening.

The JC Slam is the only PSI sanctioned and nationally recognized slam in North Jersey. That means the stakes are high because we are trying to find out who will represent Jersey City at the 2011 National Poetry Slam.

RECAP 1/14/11: The slam got off with a slow start a handful of audience members and almost nonexistent open-mic until Mad Max and Free came in to save the day. Bringing on a percussion, some freestyle and an audience with them.

The slam has turned into the Royal Rumble: a mix of new heads, up and comers and JC Slam favorites battling it out for a chance for the JC Slam Grand Slam title.

The first round was the new ish round with more than half the poets trying new material and most of it hit. In the second round was a mix of new old material but Jelly and St. Patrick muscled their way to the final. St. Patrick pulled the victory out of his cell phone arsenal to make it known he is making a run at the 2011 JC Slam Final.

It's a new year but the season is half done. Do you have what it takes to make it into the Jersey City Slam final?

After a holiday hiatus, we're back! We're starting off the New Year with the No More Rib Cage Tour paying us a visit all the way up from New England.

SO, WHY NO MORE RIBCAGE?

These four kids tossed the ribcage out the window (as should everybody who’s still saying “ribcage” in their poems) and are ready to get down to the real talk. Hailing from the legendary North[[b]]east poetry community with pedigrees from all stripes of basement bar open mics and coffee shop love/hate fests, they are ready and willing to make you laugh, cry, gasp, choke, grin, curse, and high-five all over the damn place. Just let them know the where and the when, and they will bring the rumpus. Along with anything else that will fit in Sam’s ugly-yet-reliable car when they hit the road this winter on a tour of the East Coast.

Cassandra de Alba is poet from New Hampshire who attends Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, which confuses most people. She was a member of the 2008 Manchester, NH slam team and a member of the 2010 Hampshire County slam team. Amongst the ways to her heart are wombats, avocados, and really good line breaks.

Mckendy Fils-Aime is a performance poet out of Manchester, NH. He has been a member of the 2008 Manchester NH slam team, the 2009 Worcester Poet’s Asylum slam team, and the 2010 Manchester NH slam team. He has a somewhat religious relationship with most sweets and pastries.

Emily O’Neill is a person and poet from New Jersey. (You are going to apologize for that a lot more than she is.) She has been slamming since age 17, and has been a member of the 2009 Hampshire College CUPSI team and the 2010 Hampshire County NPS team. She DJ’s living room dance parties, swims in books, and cuddles with sharks. In poetry, she enjoys speaking speechless moments and punching you in the ear as a pick-up line.

Sam Teitel has been a member of two national slam teams, Manchester, NH in 2008 and Portland, ME in 2009. In 2010 he was the assistant coach for the 2010 Manchester team. He graduated from Hampshire College with a thesis called "Poetry. Performance. Punk Rock." He is currently living in Somerville, MA and acting as a host and a heart breaker at the Slam Free Or Die reading in Manchester. He likes coffee, old paperbacks, cartoons, The Clash, and New Orleans.

Chloé Yelena Miller (http://chloeyelenamiller.blogspot.com/) is a poet and writing teacher from New Jersey. She has poems published or forthcoming in the Cortland Review, Narrative, Alimentum, Storyscape, and Lumina, among others. She teaches writing at Fairleigh Dickinson University and Northampton Community College, as well as privately. She reads poetry for The Literary Review and blogs regularly about writing and food.
Hila Ratzabi (www.hilaratzabi.com) is a poet, writer, editor, and tutor living in Brooklyn, NY. She has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize among other honors. Her poetry has been published in various literary journals and her chapbook, The Apparatus of Visible Things, is published by Finishing Line Press. She is the poetry editor of the literary journal Storyscape and co-hosts the Perfect Sense Reading Series at Cornelia Street Cafe.
