The panel will discuss how people with disabilities, who are artists, create their work and how they may be integrated better into arts programming and onto the governing boards of arts groups. If you are an artist with a disability, know an artist with a disability, are working with artists who have disabilities - please join this discussion. We need to hear from you.
This workshop IS NOT about answers. It IS about having a discussion. It is also about creativity, ideas and answering questions you may have about ADA. I hope you will join us on Sunday October 23, 2011 at Art House Productions from 2:00pm-4:30pm to be part of the discussion.

Members of UPTICo Theatre Company, (Unlimited Potential Theatre Company which works as part of VSANJ) will be talk about being actors, producers and directors who have disabilities and who are working in theatre.
Bojana Coklyat is a highly trained visual artist will also discuss what it is like to be a blind artist.
Nanette Hernandez who is the co-founder of Segunda Quimbamba, a Puerto Rican dance and drumming group (also a re-grantee) Segunda Quimbamba began a pilot program for children with autism. Nanette will discuss her experience with this new program.
Maryann Valls, a writer with Cerebral Palsy is also scheduled to be on the panel. She has great difficulty with speech and movement due to her cerebral palsy. Maryann even has trouble using a computer but persists because as an artist she has a lot to say in her writing.

Community Garden Tour & Awards - This Sunday
The Riverview Farmers Market (Sunday - 9AM- 3PM ) will play host to the Community Garden Tour this Sunday, October 23rd. The bus tour will originate and end in Riverview-Fisk Park or you can bike it with Bike JC. The tour will start at 11AM and return around 1:30PM and visit Riverview Community Garden, Sgt. Anthony Community Garde, John De Salvo Community Garden, Brunswick Community Garden, City Hall Children's Garden and Storms Avenue Community Garden. Jersey City Backyard/Front Yard (and Rooftop) Garden Competition
Residents are encouraged to nominate their own or a neighbor's garden, window box, or front/back/side yard for the first-ever contest, which will be facilitated by both the Planning Division and the Jersey City Independent. Only gardens planted by amateur gardeners are eligible - no professionally contracted work is allowed.
The judges, including our City Seedling blogger Emily Helck, will use photos and short essays written by gardeners, as well as site visits, to determine the winners in a number of categories. Those winners will be announced at a Garden Awards Ceremony on October 23, part of the Adopt-A-Lot's 2011 closing rally at the Riverview Farmers Market.
To enter, submit at least three photographs of the garden, along with an essay that's at least 100 words and explains why it is the best garden, to tanyam@jcnj.org and emilyhelck@gmail.com. Entries are due by October 21 at 5 pm.

Artist/Curators' Panel on 365 Days of Print Exhibition

Panel discussion for 365 days of print: 100 Culver Ave.

Held from 5:30 - 7 p.m. in the auditorium adjacent to the gallery. Artists and curators will discuss the artistic processes and challenges involved in their project.
The Egyptian Revolution, the Japan earthquake, the killing of Osama bin Laden - every news story has the potential to amaze, sadden and inspire.
A new NJCU Visual Arts Gallery exhibit, "365 Days of Print," shows how 43 international and local artists drew from newspaper articles to create over 120 works of art.
It all began in 2009 as one of photographer and artist Maya Joseph-Goteiner's personal projects. During her morning commute, Joseph-Goteiner was reading The New York Times when she realized how times and the news were changing. Back then, she had just started using Twitter and thinking about how digital and print news both impact their readers in different ways.
She began creating pieces of art every day using a current newspaper article and began inviting others to join her. In January, she launched the "365 Days of Print" project, in which artists create one work inspired by a news article every day for a month.

Golden Door Film festival at Loews
It is going to run from Thursday, October 13, through Sunday, October 16.
Festival events will happen at various locations around Jersey City, with the Loew's being a principal venue. We will be the site of both the opening and closing ceremonies, plus various screenings. The closing ceremony will include awards to Festival winners and special awards to the actor Paul Sorvino -- of "Goodfellas" and "Law and Order" fame, plus a whole lot of other character/supporting roles -- and to Leon Gast -- Jersey City native and Academy Award winning director of the 1996 documentary "When We Were Kings."
However please note that there will be no Festival events at the Loew's on Saturday, October 15, as the theater has already been booked for a wedding.

Halloween Mask Making with Dominick: October 15 and 22
Spooky fun with Paris Craft Masks. Design and make your own Halloween Mask that fits only your face. Children will build and mold a mask on each other that they can decorate and paint for Halloween. All supplies are safe and will be provided. Please wear old clothing. Things can get a bit messy, but guaranteed to be lots of fun.

Express yourself and enjoy movement! Dance workshop will consist of warm-up, a brief exploration of styles and two short dance routines that will allow for addition of improvised movement. Student will be encouraged to add their own style and personality to the routines in a safe, positive environment.

Students compile small stories, poems, reflections, facts, images, and other snippets to create their own "Pillow Book" -- a collection of personal expressions brought together in the form of a simple book. The workshop will draw inspiration from the coming change of seasons, using the winter solstice as a springboard for our thoughts, memories, and observations.

Live Bait! a public social sculpture
What would you risk your neck for? Live Bait! Is a public social sculpture by polymedia artist Eto Otitigbe. It consists of a set of life-sized rattraps with various kinds of bait. The sculptures will be installed on the Grove Street Path plaza with CREATIVE GROVE from Friday September 30th through Saturday October 1st. Visitors are encouraged to risk life and limb for a chance at capturing the bait.

Bharatanatyam, considered a variety of natya (dance) yoga that reveals the spiritual through the physical and emotional body is the most popular and ancient Indian classical dance form in South India. With roots that trace back to 5000 years ago, Bharatanatyam embodies music, movement and mythological stories to create a visual form. The dancer emotes and performs complex dance sequences to ancient epics and poems written on Hindu Gods and Goddesses such as Krishna, Radha, Shiva set to a uniquely composed melody and rhythm. In Hindu mythology it is believed that Shiva, the cosmic dancer or Natraja destroys evil and maintains the cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution of the Universe through his dance or Tandava.

Inspired by the surge of electric artistic energy from his relatively new home of Jersey City, and the neighboring New York City, Chelo and his wife Sirena have recently formed a multifaceted entertainment company called, Sirelo Entertainment. His ventures have allowed him to meld his learnings in a way that improves him and ultimately those around him. Chelo currently holds degrees in Psychology, Exercise Science and Humanities. City Love Project
Innovative Public Art Project Jump Starts
The Jersey City Artists Studio Tour
Brooklyn, NY, September 14, 2011- The City Love Project (CLP) is a free interactive public art show coming to the streets of Jersey City September 23rd, 2011. CLP will be present at three locations including Journal Square, McGinley Square, and Grove St. at varied times throughout the day.
CLP invites anyone and everyone to paint what you think your city loves. It is composed of several mediums including a prepared 6’x12’ canvas, photo backdrop and musical accompaniment. The canvas is prepared with a rearranged
‘I ♥ JC’, to read ‘JC ♥ __’, to visually propose CLP’s question, “What Does Your City Love?”
Using black and red paint, the canvas transforms into a living portrait of the city through the eyes of the people. After they paint, each participant is photographed.
CLP enables everyone and anyone to freely express themselves, as well as break down barriers between all classes and ethnicities of people through participatory art.
Participants are able to continue their participation with CLP virtually through video, social media and still photography, creating multi-channel connections.
CLP Jersey City is being made possible by the generous support of local donors and the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency to help promote The Jersey City Artists Studio Tour October 1st & 2nd Noon-6pm.
The final works will be displayed in City Hall and auctioned to raise funds for a One City, which donates and distributes to local food banks in Jersey City.

Trey Phillips Born and raised in Laguna Beach CA, Trey recently finished a dual BA/BFA degree from Eugene Lang and Parsons School for Design where he studied renewable energy and fashion design. He is currently a Designer for Vera Wang. From 2004 -2005 Trey was a personality on an MTV reality show: Laguna Beach, “The Real OC.”
David Harley Dorfman. David’s career began as a press officer for the Israeli Foreign Ministry at the Consulate General of Israel New York. He has since founded several successful private ventures including a film distribution business, a Fair Trade fashion company, and social marketing and branding consultancy. He has a Masters in International Affairs from New School University.

IN OBSERVANCE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH – SEPTEMBER 15 – OCTOBER 15
JERSEY CITY, NJ September 20, 2011 – The Biblioteca Criolla of the Jersey City Free Public Library announces its presentation of a group of indigenous children from Kukuma, Peru, whose photographic exposition of the “Niños de la Amazonia” organization expose their daily lives thus providing a window of identity. Their work will be displayed in a gala reception at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian on Saturday, September 24th, and immediately after travel from Washington, at the Biblioteca Criolla.
The photographic exhibit is open now, with the formal reception for the exhibit of 47 photographs to be held at Biblioteca Criolla on Tuesday, September 27th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Main Library, 4th Floor, 472 Jersey Avenue in Jersey City. The participants of “Niños de la Amazonia” will be given a Proclamation by Jersey City At-Large Councilman Ray Velazquez Jr. Light refreshments will be offered, as well as entertainment provided by a Peruvian association. The exhibit runs until Friday, September 30th.
Participants of the reception welcoming the niños de la Amazonias include the chaperones, the founder and president of the organization, “Niños de la Amazonia,” Ms. Coplan, and its board of directors, and of course, the Peruvian children themselves.
“We’re very enthusiastic, not only to highlight the incredible work of the Amazonian children, but also to thank the non-profit organization, "Children of the Amazon," for providing such valuable and unique content, one from where we can all appreciate their insights and learn from them,” said Patricia Vega, department head of the Biblioteca Criolla. Ms. Vega will offer Spanish translation so the children can fully express themselves, explaining their work and experience with this project.

The mission of “Niños de la Amazonia” is “to give remote, marginalized indigenous children their own ‘voice’ through still photo visual anthropology projects, advancing the understanding of their unique cultures.” The Peruvian children will be visiting Washington, D.C., New Jersey and New York City for a two-week stay, funded by a grant from the Rainforest Fund.
