Sneak Preview during Jersey City Artist Studio Tour: Saturday, Oct. 5, 12 - 5 p.m.
Curated by Brendan Carroll
Featured Artists: Sharon L. Butler, Mark Dagley, Enrico Gomez, Tom McGlynn,
Given the new media of today—Internet art, generative software, digital projection mapping—why do artists continue to paint? And why do they continue to explore abstraction?
Out of Step is an informal survey of current practices in abstract painting. The artists may vary in style, subject matter, temperament, and conceptual framework, but they are unified by their no-nonsense approach to painting. Most of the work on view presents simple geometric shapes that are executed in broad expanses of pure color. From cerebral to laid-back, the artists explore line, value, color, and texture in their compositions. Despite the works' superficial differences, each piece, however minimal, reveals the touch of the artist’s hand. For the artists in the show, paint is a means to an end, not the end. Abstraction, likewise, is not a cul-de-sac, but a living, breathing means of visual communication.

“The Colcha Project,” curated by Doris Cacoilo and Jeanne Brasile is being presented at the Walsh Gallery. The traveling exhibition is an ongoing project that uses crochet as a catalyst for bringing people together in collaborative modes of creativity and in exploration of culture and community. In the Portuguese tradition, colcha (quilts) are crocheted for and included in a woman’s bridal chest and may be handed down through generations. “The Colcha Project” was developed by Cacoilo as a way to share this tradition with others, inviting guests to participate in the creation of new colcha while visiting the gallery. Each iteration of the project results in a new quilt, which shall be on display in subsequent exhibitions. The documentation of making each quilt also becomes part of “The Colcha Project” as each participant adds their story to its history.
Join the project!!
In addition to the colcha that have been made, a quilt in progress will be on display in the gallery and visitors will be encouraged to contribute to its making. Each Sunday between the hours of 1pm and 5pm while “The Colcha Project” is on view in the Walsh Gallery, visitors are invited to join the curators and other members of the group to crochet, share their stories and become part of the “The Colcha Project.” Yarn and needles will be provided for those who do not have their own. Artist/Curators' Panel on 365 Days of Print Exhibition
Visual Arts Building, NJCU
Panel discussion for 365 days of print: 100 Culver Ave.
Jersey City, NJ
Held from 5:30 - 7 p.m. in the auditorium adjacent to the gallery. Artists and curators will discuss the artistic processes and challenges involved in their project.

The Egyptian Revolution, the Japan earthquake, the killing of Osama bin Laden - every news story has the potential to amaze, sadden and inspire.
A new NJCU Visual Arts Gallery exhibit, "365 Days of Print," shows how 43 international and local artists drew from newspaper articles to create over 120 works of art.
It all began in 2009 as one of photographer and artist Maya Joseph-Goteiner's personal projects. During her morning commute, Joseph-Goteiner was reading The New York Times when she realized how times and the news were changing. Back then, she had just started using Twitter and thinking about how digital and print news both impact their readers in different ways.
She began creating pieces of art every day using a current newspaper article and began inviting others to join her. In January, she launched the "365 Days of Print" project, in which artists create one work inspired by a news article every day for a month.

In recognition of the tenth anniversary of 9/11, NJCU Visual Arts Gallery presents “AFTERWARDS and FORWARD: A ten-year 9/11 reflective art exhibition,” to promote dialogue, deeper reflection, meditation, and contextualization relating to or emerging from the 9/11 disaster and to shed light on prevailing issues about violence in the world. Among other highlights of the exhibit are: Joel Meyerowitz’s Nov. 12, 2001, 2001 North Tower Shrouded in Smoke and Spray, a photograph from his Aftermath: Images from Ground Zero, 2001 series; Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree; and Ultra Violet’s sculpture, IX XI.

Annual Diversity Stride Silent Auction, NJCU
Our fifth Annual Diversity Stride Silent Auction promises to be one of best ever, with several well renowned artists, some of which have won prestigious grants/awards including Fulbright fellowships and whose work has been exhibited worldwide and is currently collected by museums and independent collectors. We also have the work of up and coming artists who have exhibited widely in the metropolitan area and who are already carvi...ng out a niche for themselves. This is your opportunity to own an art work for a fraction of the price you would pay at a gallery and at the same time help us raise funds for a worthy cause. Please mark your calendars for the opening day, which will be held on Tuesday April 19th from 4:00p.m. – 7:00p.m. at the GSUB gallery. The reception will take place in GSUB 129 where you can have some light refreshments and talk to the artists. Attached is the invitation card with the current list of artists who are donating work for this worthy cause.
The work will hang in the GSUB gallery from Monday April 18th through Monday April 25th and you may bid on the art work during gallery hours (12 Noon – 2p.m.) or by appointment (please call Sergio at Ext. 2170) The bidding will close on Monday April 25th at 2:00p.m. sharp! Additionally we have partnered with Applebee’s of Jersey City to help us raise additional funds for the Diversity Stride, so if you are thinking of eating out or ordering take out please print out the attached flyer and present it to your server on April 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st from 11:00a.m. – 10:00p.m. at the Applebee’s of Jersey City (701 Route 440 – In front of the Hudson Mall). For every bill, including those for takeout orders (201-200-9940), accompanied by the NJCU “Dining to Donate” flyer, Applebee’s will donate 10% of that bill to the American Conference on Diversity. “Dining to Donate” flyers can also be printed from the NJCU homepage under University News: http://www.njcu.edu/i2e/ne
All proceeds will benefit the American Conference on Diversity’s Youth Leadership Institute programs, which help high school and college students understand how stereotypes, bigotry, and bias impact negatively on their schools and provide them with the tools necessary to develop their own student-led action plans.
For further information about the Silent Auction, to make an appointment to see the work (starting at 2PM on April 18th), or to make a donation please call Sergio Villamizar, coordinator of NJCU’s Diversity Stride Program at 201-200-2170 or e-mail him at svillamizar@njcu.edu

March 16 - april 21
Opening reception is on March 16, 5-8 pm. The exhibition will remain on view till April 21. The artist Melanie Vote replicates childhood toys in plaster, to imbue them with a sculptural quality, and to use them as maquettes to paint landscapes from. By placing the cast toys within the contemporary American landscape as ruins and monoliths, they become archeological evidence of a society with questionably little substance to leave behind.
