so-low theater festival

SO LOW Theater Festival

Date: Thursday, September 27, 2012 To Sunday, September 30, 2012
Time: 7pm
Cost: $6 per show

A full weekend of original one-person shows! Styles range from memoir to multimedia to dance!

You Gotta Have Faith (or We'll Disown You)
A hilarious, honest and provocative account of what it's like to be an atheist in a very Catholic family. Part coming of age tale, part social commentary, this deeply personal show is a journey through religion, family and faith--with surprising revelations.

Kookspeak
Delightful death fantasies, gravely serious hand-puppet conversations, the Most Annoying Girl in the World voice and performing at the Grammy's with your true love, a FIFA World Cup star/YouTube phenomenon -- it's all fun in this series of monologues from the mouths of people who live inside their heads.

Hurricane Alana
Floods and carbon monoxide and missing kitties, oh my. There's no place like home. With the help of the hugging lady from India, a creepy astrologer, drug dealer Lewie, and a feng shui specialist, Hurricane Alana is a funny and touching story about a girl's search for love, a home and a good mold specialist.

Musical Theater for Asian Males (Only Edition)
From the debate of Miss Saigon to the death of Danny Chen, one Asian man looks at the role of his race in theater, media, and society.

RUDE
Urban Legend Breaks The Stage. Champion Slam Poet and Bay Area Hip Hop legend Azeem presents his One Man Show at the 2012 SO LOW Theater Festival

Going to America
A Welsh boy immigrating to the fantasy of a new life experiences the journey we all take from childhood to adolescence. It is 1954 when passenger steamers ruled the sea and America was the Promised Land.

Fore/closure
An original one-woman stage show by Gabby Creery based on her blog and popular column in the Jersey City Independent. Telling the riveting true account of a family's turbulent journey down the rabbit hole of unemployment, poverty and the threat of homelessness, Gabby paints an intimate portrait not just of the devastating effects of the financial crisis on a family and a marriage, but also the ways in which community and joy can be found.

Click, Start, Vroom
This monologue is performed by a 17 year old explaining the first time he has ever experienced the thrill of being behind the wheel and driving for the first time. He also explains the proper way to drive a car and how you should never drive a car. Enjoy the ride!

Letters to My Mother (But Really for my Father)
"Dear Mom" Are these words any easier to write when Mom is gone?

he Shim-Sham Slam: A Dancer's Manifesto
Blending spoken word with dance, The Shim Sham Slam: a Dancer's Manifesto looks at the highs and lows of dedicating your life to a near impossible dream. It's about sacrifice, glory, and the reasons we find for refusing defeat.

Jazz world fusion, Ladies on the Mic

Jazz Concert Brings Spice to Popular Art Space

September 4, 2012: Ladies on the Mic presents Jazz World Fusion on
Friday, September 14th at 7:30pm. Four New Jersey based jazz
performers bring their world-class talents to Art House Productions
for a free evening concert.

Headlining the evening will be Leala Cyr and Ricardo Vogt who together
blend picturesque vocals and a sensual guitar sound to create a unique
collaboration of music. Together since 2002, this pair has found a way
to combine American and Brazilian roots to form a new array of sound.
Cyr and Vogt arrange everything from Duke Ellington, to Antonio Carlos
Jobim, to Guinga. There is no surprise that this combination is an
amazing one with the incredible scat technique of Leala Cyr, who has
been busy touring with the Grammy award winning Esperanza Spalding’s
Radio Music Society and sensational accompaniment of Ricardo Vogt…it’s
a match made in jazz heaven!

Jazz vocalist and composer Laura Brunner is a songstress of incredible
artistic depth. Brunner fuses an eclectic blend of jazz harmony and
electric grooves with her use of popular songs, jazz standards, and
original compositions. Brunner has become a deeply committed educator,
dedicating her life to the preservation and promotion of American Jazz
and its history to future generations. She has shared the stage with
an extraordinary array of musicians such as Kurt Elling, Ellis
Marsalis, Sheila E., Esperanza Spalding, Riannon, Bryan Baker, and the
Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Brunner is currently in the process of
recording her debut album and can be seen performing in the Midwest,
New England, and New York City areas.

Rebecca Vallejo, a Jersey City resident originally from Madrid, Spain
comes from a family of singers and began performing in public at age
four. She has performed on stages in Brazil, Cuba, Germany, Belgium,
Great Britain and Spain. Her repertoire includes songs in Spanish,
English and Portuguese. With two albums under her belt Vallejo is
currently in production of recording her third CD, which will be
produced in Spain, Brazil and the US. Vallejo is a versatile and
innovative vocalist, known for combining her ancestral flamenco roots,
her deep love and understanding of Brazilian
music, with the language of jazz creating a sound that is truly unique.

Art Eat Up

Pro Arts Presents Art Eat-Up Friday March 9th, 7pm-10pm

Location:
ART HOUSE PRODUCTIONS
HAMILTON SQ. 1 MCWILLIAMS PL.
JERSEY CITY, NJ 07302

Pro Arts Art Eat-Up is a food, drink and entertainment event with a twist; for a small donation, guests eat a delicious meal, enjoy good company and musical entertainment, and vote for the most worthy art proposal on the menu that night. All proceeds collected go to the winning project, which will be displayed at the next Art Eat-Up event. It is a great way to network, meet new people, have fun and provide support for a local art project. Art Eat-Up provides individual grants for artists, connects artists to each other and to the greater community and promotes the artistic livelihood of our community. Artists Click Here for
Art Eat-Up is a grants process that gives an artist an unrestricted financial resource to realize a visual arts proposal, whether it is for one piece or an entire body of work. The grant may provide materials, equipment or even living expenses while the artist completes the project.
Art Eat-Up is grassroots funding at its best: donations for the community dinner go directly to funding art-makers whose proposals draw the most votes from the diners.
The process is purposely simple: Anyone can submit a proposal to Arts Eat-Up. Community participation in the grant selection process is the key: through this process we hope to stimulate and support experimental, critical and imaginative projects that may not be eligible for formal funding.
Art Eat-Up connects artists with artists, artists with the community, and the community with each other during Art Eat-Up dinners. It provides artists the opportunity to begin marketing their work before it is made. It creates momentum and awareness for art projects promoted during the event and possibly realized with the help of the Art-Eat-Up grant.
How it Works
Art Eat-Up event. Entrance will provide each person with one ballot and dinner with musical entertainment and beverages. Diners view a variety of proposed artworks and art projects. Each diner can cast one vote on the project they would like to see awarded a grant. After dinner, ballots will be counted and the art proposal receiving the most votes will be awarded the money raised through entrance donations (minus expenses and a portion to second and third prize).
The grant money is awarded to the winning artist or organization without limitations on how they use the grant money. Artists can take home the money that same evening. Documentation of the finalized project will be on display at the next Art Eat-Up, as well as other venues, including the web, informing the community of the progress and completion of each winning project.

Watch this space for the next scheduled Art Eat-Up.
We want to thank our sponsors: Art House Productions, Made with Love, and Palace Drugs who have made this Eat-Up possible.
