With a background in music, photography, film, and design, Alexis is truly an artist and Renaissance woman. But with all her talents she has chosen to pursue the love of her life, music. Alexis' musical journey began at age 7, when she began, singing in choirs, playing the flute, and playing her favorite instrument, the piano at age 9. Her interest in electronic/ dance music arose in her early teens, but she chose to pursue training in the arts to broaden her horizons. In September of 2007, however, Alexis returned to her musical roots and began to pursue her DJ career more seriously; landing her gigs at Pacha (NYC), Love (NYC), Sullivan Room (NYC), Deko Lounge (NJ), and many other venues, parties, and events in NY and NJ. She is dedicated to playing music she truly believes in, enjoys, and perfecting her technique. Over the past few years she has met, been inspired and encouraged by exceptionally talented DJs, including The Martinez Brothers, Roy Davis Jr., and Brothers Vibe. Their work ethic, humility, and passion for what they do have truly motivated her to push forward.

The panel will discuss how people with disabilities, who are artists, create their work and how they may be integrated better into arts programming and onto the governing boards of arts groups. This workshop IS NOT about answers. It IS about having a discussion. It is also about creativity, ideas and answering questions you may have about ADA. I hope you will join us on Sunday October 23, 2011 at Art House Productions from 2:00pm-4:30pm to be part of the discussion.

The panel:
Members of UPTICo Theatre Company, (Unlimited Potential Theatre Company which works as part of VSANJ) will be talk about being actors, producers and directors who have disabilities and who are working in theatre.

Bojana Coklyat is a highly trained visual artist will also discuss what it is like to be a blind artist.

Nanette Hernandez who is the co-founder of Segunda Quimbamba, a Puerto Rican dance and drumming group (also a re-grantee) Segunda Quimbamba began a pilot program for children with autism. Nanette will discuss her experience with this new program.

Maryann Valls, a writer with Cerebral Palsy is also scheduled to be on the panel. She has great difficulty with speech and movement due to her cerebral palsy. Maryann even has trouble using a computer but persists because as an artist she has a lot to say in her writing.

Big Dig Planting Make a Difference Day

The Big Dig is part of Make A Difference Day, a nationwide effort of volunteerism that engages all communities to plan and execute a one-day project that will impact their neighborhood, their community, their city. The Jersey City Parks Coalition (RNA is a member)  is going to plant in park entries, open spaces and gateways throughout the city a minimum of 17,000 spring flowering bulbs with the help of hundreds of community volunteers. The result ˆ a city wide floral display marking the end of winter and encouraging continued community involvement with the Greening of Jersey. For more information visit www.jcparks.org. Community Garden Tour & Awards - This Sunday

The Riverview Farmers Market (Sunday - 9AM- 3PM ) will play host to the Community Garden Tour this Sunday, October 23rd.  The bus tour will originate and end in Riverview-Fisk Park or you can bike it with Bike JC.  The tour will start at 11AM and return around 1:30PM and visit Riverview Community Garden, Sgt. Anthony Community Garde, John De Salvo Community Garden, Brunswick Community Garden, City Hall Children's Garden and Storms Avenue Community Garden.  The bus is free but you need to reserve your spot by calling 201-547-4513 or email: freirei@jcnj.org. 

Jersey City Backyard/Front Yard (and Rooftop) Garden Competition

Residents are encouraged to nominate their own or a neighbor's garden, window box, or front/back/side yard for the first-ever contest, which will be facilitated by both the Planning Division and the Jersey City Independent. Only gardens planted by amateur gardeners are eligible - no professionally contracted work is allowed.

The judges, including our City Seedling blogger Emily Helck, will use photos and short essays written by gardeners, as well as site visits, to determine the winners in a number of categories. Those winners will be announced at a Garden Awards Ceremony on October 23, part of the Adopt-A-Lot's 2011 closing rally at the Riverview Farmers Market.

To enter, submit at least three photographs of the garden, along with an essay that's at least 100 words and explains why it is the best garden, to tanyam@jcnj.org and emilyhelck@gmail.com. Entries are due by October 21 at 5 pm.

The Central Avenue SID is pleased to announce the unveiling of the most recent mural added to the Central Avenue streetscape. "Koi Too", by artist and Heights resident Ed Morris (aka T.Dee). The splendid mural was completed last week on the sidewall of the historic Jersey Drugs building at 286 Central Avenue. A visual feast, it features vibrant, colorful and larger-than-life koi fish swimming in the walls and is a truly extraordinary and captivating example of public art that continues Central Avenue's tradition of commissioning outstanding local artists to add their distinct, irrepressible visions to the Avenue.

The unveiling will be held on a new rain date to be announced,
next to the Jersey Drugs building at the corner of Central Avenue and Hutton Street  in the Jersey City Heights.

The Egyptian Revolution, the Japan earthquake, the killing of Osama bin Laden - every news story has the potential to amaze, sadden and inspire.
A new NJCU Visual Arts Gallery exhibit, "365 Days of Print," shows how 43 international and local artists drew from newspaper articles to create over 120 works of art.
It all began in 2009 as one of photographer and artist Maya Joseph-Goteiner's personal projects. During her morning commute, Joseph-Goteiner was reading The New York Times when she realized how times and the news were changing. Back then, she had just started using Twitter and thinking about how digital and print news both impact their readers in different ways.
She began creating pieces of art every day using a current newspaper article and began inviting others to join her. In January, she launched the "365 Days of Print" project, in which artists create one work inspired by a news article every day for a month.

The Distillery Gallery & Artspace recently obtained variances from the Board of Adjustment, designating the gallery as commercial property and paving the way for its re-opening this fall. During the preparation of the application it was brought to light that the Distillery was already part of an existing “Riverview Arts District”, established in May of 1984 by Council Resolution. In order to make the “Riverview Arts District” a reality and nurture the Heights artist community, we’re asking for your help in providing clarity to the following questions via survey about artistic production and live/work space. Golden Door Film festival at Loews

This week we are pleased to be a participating sponsor of the Golden Door International Film Festival of Jersey City in its inaugural year.

It is going to run from Thursday, October 13, through Sunday, October 16.

Festival events will happen at various locations around Jersey City, with the Loew's being a principal venue. We will be the site of both the opening and closing ceremonies, plus various screenings. The closing ceremony will include awards to Festival winners and special awards to the actor Paul Sorvino -- of "Goodfellas" and "Law and Order" fame, plus a whole lot of other character/supporting roles -- and to Leon Gast -- Jersey City native and Academy Award winning director of the 1996 documentary "When We Were Kings."

However please note that there will be no Festival events at the Loew's on Saturday, October 15, as the theater has already been booked for a wedding.

Live Bait! a public social sculpture

Live Bait!   Eto Otitigbe

What would you risk your neck for?  Live Bait! Is a public social sculpture by polymedia artist Eto Otitigbe.  It consists of a set of life-sized rattraps with various kinds of bait.  The sculptures will be installed on the Grove Street Path plaza with CREATIVE GROVE from Friday September 30th through  Saturday October 1st.  Visitors are encouraged to risk life and limb for a chance at capturing the bait.

MONEESHA KAMANI (Kalakshetra Style of Bharatanatyam)
Utsava (Sanskrit meaning festival): Join Moneesha Kamani and students in a bharatanatyam performance and class demonstration by Malachite Arts at Grassroots Community Space on the happy festival of Onam- a harvest celebration in South India. Bharatanatyam, considered a variety of natya (dance) yoga that reveals the spiritual through the physical and emotional body is the most popular and ancient Indian classical dance form in South India. With roots that trace back to 5000 years ago, Bharatanatyam embodies music, movement and mythological stories to create a visual form. The dancer emotes and performs complex dance sequences to ancient epics and poems written on Hindu Gods and Goddesses such as Krishna, Radha, Shiva set to a uniquely composed melody and rhythm. In Hindu mythology it is believed that Shiva, the cosmic dancer or Natraja destroys evil and maintains the cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution of the Universe through his dance or Tandava.

We also aim to emphasize and develop skills in self-discipline, teamwork, leadership skills, decision making skills, appreciation of multicultural differences, and community service. CHELO MERCADO (POI)
Relatively new to Jersey City, Chelo has had a crash course in the art scene. Since 1999, he has managed and created a number of non-profit community outreach family and service programs. Recently, Chelo has spear-headed a local artistic neighborhood improvement/service providing facility called Grassroots Community Space. “Grassroots” is the home of a multitude of diverse holistic, artistic and educational programs.
Inspired by the surge of electric artistic energy from his relatively new home of Jersey City, and the neighboring New York City, Chelo and his wife Sirena have recently formed a multifaceted entertainment company called, Sirelo Entertainment. His ventures have allowed him to meld his learnings in a way that improves him and ultimately those around him. Chelo currently holds degrees in Psychology, Exercise Science and Humanities. He is a creator, dancer, percussionist, fire spinner and much more…

In addition to individual creative pursuits our artists extend their knowledge and love of art to the community through classes, workshops and social events including gallery openings, dances and performances.
