MONEESHA KAMANI (Kalakshetra Style of Bharatanatyam)
Utsava (Sanskrit meaning festival): Join Moneesha Kamani and students in a bharatanatyam performance and class demonstration by Malachite Arts at Grassroots Community Space on the happy festival of Onam- a harvest celebration in South India. Bharatanatyam, considered a variety of natya (dance) yoga that reveals the spiritual through the physical and emotional body is the most popular and ancient Indian classical dance form in South India. With roots that trace back to 5000 years ago, Bharatanatyam embodies music, movement and mythological stories to create a visual form. The dancer emotes and performs complex dance sequences to ancient epics and poems written on Hindu Gods and Goddesses such as Krishna, Radha, Shiva set to a uniquely composed melody and rhythm. In Hindu mythology it is believed that Shiva, the cosmic dancer or Natraja destroys evil and maintains the cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution of the Universe through his dance or Tandava.

City Love Project

The City Love Project Comes to Jersey City

Innovative Public Art Project Jump Starts
 The Jersey City Artists Studio Tour

Brooklyn, NY, September 14, 2011- The City Love Project (CLP) is a free interactive public art show coming to the streets of Jersey City September 23rd, 2011.  CLP will be present at three locations including Journal Square, McGinley Square, and Grove St. at varied times throughout the day.

CLP invites anyone and everyone to paint what you think your city loves.  It is composed of several mediums including a prepared 6’x12’ canvas, photo backdrop and musical accompaniment.  The canvas is prepared with a rearranged
‘I ♥ JC’, to read ‘JC ♥ __’, to visually propose CLP’s question, “What Does Your City Love?”

Using black and red paint, the canvas transforms into a living portrait of the city through the eyes of the people. After they paint, each participant is photographed.

CLP enables everyone and anyone to freely express themselves, as well as break down barriers between all classes and ethnicities of people through participatory art.

Participants are able to continue their participation with CLP virtually through video, social media and still photography, creating multi-channel connections.

CLP Jersey City is being made possible by the generous support of local donors and the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency to help promote The Jersey City Artists Studio Tour October 1st & 2nd Noon-6pm.

The final works will be displayed in City Hall and auctioned to raise funds for a One City, which donates and distributes to local food banks in Jersey City.

Born and raised in Laguna Beach CA, Trey recently finished a dual BA/BFA degree from Eugene Lang and Parsons School for Design where he studied renewable energy and fashion design. He is currently a Designer for Vera Wang. From 2004 -2005 Trey was a personality on an MTV reality show: Laguna Beach, “The Real OC.”

David Harley Dorfman. 
David’s career began as a press officer for the Israeli Foreign Ministry at the Consulate General of Israel New York. He has since founded several successful private ventures including a film distribution business, a Fair Trade fashion company, and social marketing and branding consultancy.  He has a Masters in International Affairs from New School University.

IN OBSERVANCE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH – SEPTEMBER 15 – OCTOBER 15

JERSEY CITY, NJ   September 20, 2011 – The Biblioteca Criolla of the Jersey City Free Public Library announces its presentation of a group of indigenous children from Kukuma, Peru, whose photographic exposition of the “Niños de la Amazonia” organization expose their daily lives thus providing a window of identity. Their work will be displayed in a gala reception at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian on Saturday, September 24th, and immediately after travel from Washington, at the Biblioteca Criolla.
The photographic exhibit is open now, with the formal reception for the exhibit of 47 photographs to be held at Biblioteca Criolla on Tuesday, September 27th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Main Library, 4th Floor, 472 Jersey Avenue in Jersey City. The participants of “Niños de la Amazonia” will be given a Proclamation by Jersey City At-Large Councilman Ray Velazquez Jr. Light refreshments will be offered, as well as entertainment provided by a Peruvian association. The exhibit runs until Friday, September 30th.
Participants of the reception welcoming the niños de la Amazonias include the chaperones, the founder and president of the organization, “Niños de la Amazonia,” Ms. Coplan, and its board of directors, and of course, the Peruvian children themselves.
“We’re very enthusiastic, not only to highlight the incredible work of the Amazonian children, but also to thank the non-profit organization, "Children of the Amazon," for providing such valuable and unique content, one from where we can all appreciate their insights and learn from them,” said Patricia Vega, department head of the Biblioteca Criolla. Ms. Vega will offer Spanish translation so the children can fully express themselves, explaining their work and experience with this project.

The mission of  “Niños de la Amazonia” is “to give remote, marginalized indigenous children their own ‘voice’ through still photo visual anthropology projects, advancing the understanding of their unique cultures.” The Peruvian children will be visiting Washington, D.C., New Jersey and New York City for a two-week stay, funded by a grant from the Rainforest Fund.

The anchor piece of the Confessions exhibit is Fore/closure—an original one-woman stage show by Gabby Creery based on her blog and popular column in the Jersey City Independent. Telling the riveting true account of a family’s turbulent journey down the rabbit hole of unemployment, poverty and the threat of homelessness, Gabby paints an intimate portrait not just of the devastating effects of the financial crisis on a family and a marriage, but also the ways in which community and joy can be found.
$5 suggested donation at the door. Proceeds will go to Grace Community services, who generously helps programs like this.

AFTERWARDS and FORWARD: A ten-year 9/11 reflective art exhibition

In recognition of the tenth anniversary of 9/11, NJCU Visual Arts Gallery presents “AFTERWARDS and FORWARD: A ten-year 9/11 reflective art exhibition,” to promote dialogue, deeper reflection, meditation, and contextualization relating to or emerging from the 9/11 disaster and to shed light on prevailing issues about violence in the world. Three themes are represented in the exhibition: artistic responses to 9/11; artistic responses to the war on terror; artworks to promote peace efforts. Each of 18 artists whose work has been selected for the exhibit has demonstrated a strong commitment to anti-war issues throughout his or her career.

The exhibition includes two significant works on loan from the National September 11 Memorial Museum: Milton Rosa-Ortiz’s Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, a light box with World Trade Center debris; and Werner Pfeiffer’s artist’s book, Out of the Sky-9/11 a tribute. Among other highlights of the exhibit are: Joel Meyerowitz’s Nov. 12, 2001, 2001 North Tower Shrouded in Smoke and Spray, a photograph from his Aftermath: Images from Ground Zero, 2001 series; Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree; and Ultra Violet’s sculpture, IX XI.

Other contributors to the exhibition are: Hugo Bastidas, an NJCU professor of painting; Richard A. Buntzen, a 2009 NJCU alumnus and collage artist; Nemat El-Nasser, a Jordanian artist; Carole A. Feuerman, an internationally active sculptor; Ben Jones, NJCU professor emeritus of art; Thierry Palau, a French graphic designer; Duda Penteado, a Brazilian-American artist; José Rodeiro, an NJCU professor of art history and painter; Herb Rosenberg, NJCU professor and sculptor; Patricia Saxton, a graphic designer/author; Jacqui Taylor-Basker, a film maker; Raul Villarreal, a 2006 NJCU alumnus and painter/author; and Chee Wang Ng, a Malaysian-American artist. Works by these artists include paintings, collages, prints, sculpture, graphic designs, a film, and an installation. A 24-page catalog is available on this exhibition at the gallery. Get ready for another season of amazing poetry, eclectic hosting, and fantastic features! This year JEREY CITY SLAM is starting the slam season right, on a JC FRIDAY! As if that was not enough, we are proud to have CAROLINE ROTHSTEIN as the feature for our season opener!

It has been a long summer for some, so here is a review on the slam rules:
* Maximum 8 poets to a slam
* The time limit for your poem is 3:10. After that t...he point deductions begin!
* There will be two rounds cumulating in a final round where the top two poets will face off.

As it is a new season, we encourage all poets to come out swinging with new material!

Because this is such a special event-- Slam Season beginning, amazing feature, JC FRIDAY-- This week's slam will be held at the amazing 143 Columbus location! Come for the poetry and stick around... you never know what is going to happen on a JC FRIDAY!

Located just two blocks from the Jersey City Art School. The Jersey City Art School Workshop or, JCAS Artist Workshop is an 1800 square foot facility housing up to eight mobile artist studios, a screen-printing and etching studio as well as a gallery space.

The goal of the JCAS Artist Workshop is to offer art services such as graphic design and merchandise printing. The JCAS Artist Workshop also doubles as a retail space for merchandise featuring limited edition works of art by established as well as emerging fine artists and especially skilled artisans.

... Segunda Quimbamba(5pm):
Segunda Quimbamba is a Jersey City Based percussion and dance ensemble that performs authentic Bomba and Plena, the drum music of Puerto Rico. The ensemble was founded by its director, Juan Cartagena and his wife Nanette Hernandez, as Los Pleneros de la Segunda (The Pleneros from Second Street) in 1989 during the Christmas season to perserve the Puerto Rican tradition of caroling called parrandas. Over the years, family members joined the group which began playing Bomba in 1995. In 1997 the name was changed to Segunda Quimbamba in honor of both Second Street, Jersey City, where most of the members live or have lived and Quimbamba, the mystical place described in a poem by the famous Puerto Rican poet Luis Pales Matos, called "Majestad Negra". in 1997 the Segunda Quimbamba Folkloric Center, Inc. was created to promote Bomba and Plena in New Jersey and the rest of the country. The Center produces a Newsletter about Bomba and Plena called, Guiro y Maraca and conducts music and dance workshops in these genres to share these traditions with the public and younger generations. Founder and Director Juan Cartagena was recognized as a Master folk artist by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (NJSCA) in 2004. He also received FolkLife Apprenticeship grants from the NJSCA to further study Bomba and Plena with master artist Miguel Sierra, as well as study Bomba with Roberto Cepeda, a reknown master artist in Puerto Rico. Juan has also received a Mentorship grant from the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation to collaborate with Roberto Cepeda. In 2006 and 2007, Nanette Hernandez, the co-founder of the group, was awarded a Folklife Apprenticeship grant by NJSCA to study Bomba Dance with master artist, Juan Usera.

Fancy Colors (9pm): is a new band that includes members of Jupiter One, CHAPPO, and Vetiver. The lyrics take their inspiration from what Rumi may have scribbled down after seeing his first Dada exhibit. They are currently finishing their first album, "Near Equator".
