Sunday night film forum: Water

Jersey City Arts school  presents “Water” (2005)   sun jan 30, 7.30 pm

Set in India in 1938, director Deepa Mehta’s “Water” follows 8-year-old Chuyia, a former child wife who must spend the rest of her life in a temple for Hindu widows. Exposed to the hardships of the women in the commune, Chuyia waits in the hope her mother will take her home. But it's through the trials of another widow, a beautiful prostitute named Kalyani who's courted by a follower of Gandhism from ...a higher caste, that Chuyia learns the true restrictions of widowhood.

The third film in a trilogy of stories of forbidden love, “Water” was completed after Mehta relocated to Canada from her native India, to escape death threats over her previous films. As a filmmaker who regularly questions political, religious, and social norms in her homeland, Deepa Mehta’s body of films have incited riots, protests, and the burning of cinemas by her detractors. Come see what makes this director’s work so stirring and controversial.

Film starts at 7:30, discussion to follow.
FREE admission; $5 donation suggested.

writer's seminar week 4: sound and sensibility

JC art school, monday 9/ 13,  7.30 - 9.30 pm

At the heart of much great writing is the balance between “sound and sense,” Alexander Pope told us—and in this session we will see how good prosody (meter and rhymes in a proscribed order) will, like the lyrics of a song, elevate the sentiments you want to convey. This discussion will focus primarily on poetry; poets discussed will include W.H. Auden, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and John Donne. Participants are also encouraged to ...bring in and share poems they have written.

writer´s seminar week 3, " the beautiful sentence"

August 30 · 7:30pm - 9:30pm,  JC Art school, 326 5th street
This talk will set out to create an appreciation for sentence architecture—necessarily in prose, though we will also discuss lines of poetry that accomplish a similar end. How important is that first sentence in a short story, really? What sets a great sentence apart from a merely good one? Through textual analysis of authors from Gertrude Stein to Jonathan Lethem, and an in-session exercise, we will attempt to turn a plain stat...ement into a piece of art.

writers seminar, multiplicity

aug 23, 7.30 - 9.30  JC Art school  326 5th street

This week we will experiment with multiplicity. Authors often “stuff” their work to make it more illusive or fantastic, and popular genres like magical realism and hysterical realism, as well as multimodal or hybrid texts, demonstrate this: we have many settings, myriad characters, a wealth of contexts in which to see the same situation. We will delve into the advantages of showing the reader these diverse facets, enjoying some ...examples in the work of Jorge Luis Borges, Robert Coover, John Dos Passos, and others. An optional writing exercise will be assigned.

Italian for “the sweet life,” La Dolce Vita (1960) is Federico Fellini’s lush and intoxicating masterpiece on life, love, decadence and excess. Subject to widespread censorship, the film was condemned by the Vatican newspape...r L’Osservatore in 1960, and banned in Spain until 1975 after the death of Franco.

writers seminar week 1

at JC Art school    aug 16, 7.30 - 9.30

Even experienced writers can fall into the trap of wordiness; in this, our first session, we will learn to express more by saying less. We’ll examine passages that do a lot in a short space, discussing how and why they create a satisfying effect. (Featured authors will include Ernest Hemingway and Denis Johnson.) a deeper dive into digital photography

may 8 - 9, 12 - 3 pm, 326 5th street
JCAS is proud to host Haley Jane Samuelson to discuss her photography and the craft of digital photography. Seductive, storybook, and theatrical, Samuelson stages dreamy scenes, shooting them digitally. She masterfully alters some images to add an otherworldly overlay that seems to literally bring dreams to life. Her work points to Cindy Sherman and Sally Mann, yet retains a unique personality and essence.

This lecture is a precursor to a Digital Photography Workshop Samuelson is teaching at JCAS on May 1&2:

--A comprehensive overview of digital cameras and their capabilities

--Get hands-on techniques on how to take a great photograph

--Learn about color space, white balance, the in camera light meter, and the differences and advantage of shooting in various file formats
