Friends of the Loew's Event Volunteers do everything from selling the tickets to making the popcorn to showing patrons to their seats and cleaning up the theatre afterwards. If you are interested in joining us this weekend or at any other event this season, email us at loewsjersey@gmail.com or call us at (201) 798-6055.
There will be an especially warm sense of camaraderie for those who help us in making sure the show does go on this weekend. As always, volunteers can bring a guest to help, pick a complimentary selection from our concession stand, and after the crowd is in and the film begins, they can enjoy the show. We do ask, however, that volunteers stay 30-40 minutes after the final show the help us clean up.

out of step, abstract paint works at NJCU gallery

Artists’ Reception: Tuesday, Oct. 8, 5 - 8 p.m, with Curator/Artists Q+A at 6:30 p.m.
Sneak Preview during Jersey City Artist Studio Tour: Saturday, Oct. 5, 12 - 5 p.m.
Curated by Brendan Carroll
Featured Artists: Sharon L. Butler, Mark Dagley, Enrico Gomez, Tom McGlynn,
Given the new media of today—Internet art, generative software, digital projection mapping—why do artists continue to paint? And why do they continue to explore abstraction?
Out of Step is an informal survey of current practices in abstract painting. The artists may vary in style, subject matter, temperament, and conceptual framework, but they are unified by their no-nonsense approach to painting. Most of the work on view presents simple geometric shapes that are executed in broad expanses of pure color. From cerebral to laid-back, the artists explore line, value, color, and texture in their compositions. Despite the works' superficial differences, each piece, however minimal, reveals the touch of the artist’s hand. For the artists in the show, paint is a means to an end, not the end. Abstraction, likewise, is not a cul-de-sac, but a living, breathing means of visual communication.

Ed Bielski art now in Jersey City
Well. Here I am. Hanging out at Uta's. Trying my hand at writing this here blog.
I guess for starters I should say something about this painting that is posted above. I did this one a while back and it really has me wondering where my mind was at when I created it. But it happened and I can't take that back. I guess that is a rule that is applicable to many things in life. I had this painting hanging at Balance Hair Salon in Jersey City, took it down and gave it away. Or maybe I threw it away. I can't honestly remember. It doesn't matter.
I have been searching, no, I have been clawing, striving, shit I have been doing everything imaginable to become an artist and here I sit feeling pretty foolish. I have always believed we are all artists aching to break out of our shells. Somehow, this game called life imposes endless barriers in our way for self expression, though I must admit most of these restrictions are self imposed. Or, at least, that is how it seems to me. I have been an artist all along, for whatever reason feeling shame for it. It doesn't make sense. I find myself thinking of Gandhi as he said "Be the change you wish to see in the world". Funny, but I thought I could just become the change without having to work much for it---how pathetic. Or should I say "lame". But I am just a person finding his way through this strange life.
I am going to be taking art work more seriously and would like to get my work out in the public a little more than what I have been doing. I have to say, there have been times where I have been driven to do art work for all the wrong reasons. That main reason being money. But I guess living paycheck to paycheck will do that to you. Eating peanut butter straight from the container, canned veggies with white rice a delicacy {salt if I am feeling dangerous}. It would make anyone strive for better times, I suppose.
So. This Friday I will be at CREATIVE GROVE. I hope to have some new art work to show, possibly sell. It is a good time there, Hope to see you there.

He is open for public comments & questions and will answer any of our concerns.
Jorge is presenting to The Historic Preservation Commission tonite, Monday September 16th, 6:30pm Council Chambers if anyone would like to attend.

Bright Street Redevelopment-Bright & Varick
Subcommittee will present the latest information on the current status of the proposed development on 268 Varick St. (the corner of Bright & Varick, across from the main entrance of PS3/MS4 school)
The redevelopment plan and proposed project is for an extremely high density (87 units) development - over 4x what is allowed in the Van Vorst neighborhood. It also has ZERO parking provisions. How this project is being allowed is very concerning for all in the neighborhood and sets dangerous precedents for the surrounding communities. So please come if you want to learn more, get involved or at least stop in and sign our petition of support.
