crafting the short story
JCAS's(jersey city art school) newest writers' course is focusing on short fiction. Each participant will, over the span of 4 weeks, complete a draft of a short story and receive feedback on it from the rest of the group. We will review techniques as they are used by past masters of the craft, then apply them to our own work.

Sunday night film forum: Water
Jersey City Arts school presents “Water” (2005) sun jan 30, 7.30 pm
Set in India in 1938, director Deepa Mehta’s “Water” follows 8-year-old Chuyia, a former child wife who must spend the rest of her life in a temple for Hindu widows. Exposed to the hardships of the women in the commune, Chuyia waits in the hope her mother will take her home. But it's through the trials of another widow, a beautiful prostitute named Kalyani who's courted by a follower of Gandhism from ...a higher caste, that Chuyia learns the true restrictions of widowhood.
The third film in a trilogy of stories of forbidden love, “Water” was completed after Mehta relocated to Canada from her native India, to escape death threats over her previous films. As a filmmaker who regularly questions political, religious, and social norms in her homeland, Deepa Mehta’s body of films have incited riots, protests, and the burning of cinemas by her detractors. Come see what makes this director’s work so stirring and controversial.
Film starts at 7:30, discussion to follow.
FREE admission; $5 donation suggested.
Beverages will be available, but please leave food at the door.
Country: Canada
Language: Hindi

Films before the Motion Picture Code (Hays Code) at the Loews
@ the Landmark Loews Theater
This Friday and Saturday films made before the introduction and enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code, also known as the Hays Code -- a set of industry censorship guidelines that governed the production of most motion pictures released by major American studios from 1930 to 1968.
Of course, seeing a show at the Loew's is always a lot of fun. But being a part of the volunteer team that puts on the show is an experience you'll never forget! Curious? Read more below, just after this weekend's schedule.
Friday, January 28 - 8PM - SPECIAL DOUBLE FEATURE
Freaks
Directed by Tod Browning. 1932, 65mins.
An extraordinary bit of film-making that uses real circus sideshow performers to tell a story of love, deceit and revenge, with a frank-for-its-day approach to sexual gamesmanship and violent retribution. Though surprisingly non-exploitative of its characters, the movie scandalized audiences and helped ruin director Tod Browning's career. In recent years it has become a cult classic.
followed by
She Done Him Wrong
Starring Mae West, Cary Grant & Noah Beery, Sr. Directed by Lowell Sherman. 1933, 65mins.
Mae West's first and best film, since it was not watered down by the subsequently ascendant censors. It is the ultimate distillation of her charismatic persona of simmering seductiveness and innuendo-laced one liners.
Please Note Special Double Feature Price: $8 adults / $6 seniors (65+) and kids (12 & younger).
Saturday, January 29 - 6:30 PM
Morocco
Starring Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper & Adolphe Menjou. Directed by Josef von Sternberg. 1930, 92mins.
Dietrich's iconic performance in top hat and tails and her scandalously -- for the day -- kissing another woman created her enduring screen persona of simmering, androgynous eroticism.
Saturday, January 29 - 8:30 PM
Baby Face
Starring Barbara Stanwyck, George Brent, and a very brief appearance by John Wayne. Directed by Alfred E. Green.
1933, 71mins.
This amazingly frank drama about a woman sleeping her way to the top was one of the films that was most often decried by the advocates of movie censorship.
Admission for Saturday's films: $6 adults / $4 seniors (65+) and kids (12 & younger).
There's a sense of anticipation just before the doors open, then a rush of excitement as tickets are sold, popcorn is popped, patrons are directed to their seats and first-time visitors look around in amazement at the architecture. And when the organ plays out and the lights dim, there's a great feeling of accomplishment – you've just helped a timeless entertainment tradition continue. Then, to top it off, you get to watch the movie.
Want to see what it's like? Join us!
If you're interested in becoming an FOL Event Volunteer for this weekend or at any of the shows this season, just email us at loewsjersey@gmail.com or call (201) 798-6055. As always, volunteers can bring a friend to help, pick a complimentary selection from our concession stand, and after the crowd is in and the movie begins, enjoy the show. Please try to plan to stay for 30 or 40 minutes after the last screening to help us clean up.

Be A Part Of The Show!
