JCAS's(jersey city art school) newest writers' course is focusing on short fiction. Each participant will, over the span of 4 weeks, complete a draft of a short story and receive feedback on it from the rest of the group. We will review techniques as they are used by past masters of the craft, then apply them to our own work.

Writers' Info Session and Cocktail Evening

We're having a party to spread the word about the JCAS writers' seminars. If you are a writer in the neighborhood, or a would-be writer, or just curious about how these weekly sessions might fit into your life, you're cordially invited to join us for pre-holiday drinks, snacks, and conversation. Bring a friend, date, relative... all, of both the writing and non-writing persuasions, are welcome!

It's very acceptable to bring something to eat or drink but, for heaven's sake, you don't have to.

Love, loyalty, hallucinogens, sex, and the book of the dead collide in French auteur Gaspar Noe's latest release, "Enter The Void."  Set amid the vivid lights of Tokyo, a drug-dealing teen is shot during a police raid. Honoring the pact he and his sister made as young orphans, his spirit returns to watch over her during the aftermath of his death.

Shot entirely from one character's point of view, Noe's new film uses innovative cinematography and dazzling visuals to explore the boundaries between reality and perception, as well as life and death.

4-week Intro to Stained Glass at JCAS

Thursday November 11th · 7 - 10pm

Introduction to Stained Glass.
Design your own pattern and work from it to construct a unique stained glass piece. The class will start with an overview of tools and safety, and continue with design and fabrication. No artistic experience required and all skill levels are welcome.

This Class will run Thursdays Nov. 11, 18 and Dec 2, 9. (7 to 10pm)

As a Father's Day treat, Jersey City Art School has acquired an 8mm print of the first feature-length comedy, "Tillie's Punctured Romance" from 1914. Directed by Mack Sennett, the film stars Marie Dressler, Mabel Normand, Charlie Chaplin, and the Keystone Cops.

JCAS Presents: A Screening of "Waltz with Bashir"

 

Directed by Ari Folman, "Waltz with Bashir" (2008) is an award-winning animated documentary that depicts Folman's search for lost memories from the time he was a soldier in the 1982 Lebanon War. Predominately depicted in animation, the film is a fascinating amalgam of music from different genres, realistic graphics, and surrealistic imagery. This forum will focus on discussing why Folman decided to tell a tumultuous period in his life using animation over live action--and in turn how this may have helped him constructively regain a memory.

While the case grew both in magnitude of allegation as well as nation-wide coverage, the oldest son secretly turned his home movie camera on his family, documenting their ordeal from within. Combining modern interviews with archived news reels and candid home footage, award-winning director Andrew Jarecki explores the elusive nature of truth when retold through the lens of multiple peoples’ memory.

Sunday Night Film Forums @ JCAS

Cutting-edge filmmaker Maya Deren redefined American experimental film in the 1940s and 50s with her silent shorts that explored human identity and ritual through dreamlike symbols and visuals. She traveled within the burgeoning New York City avant-garde movement, collaborating with several heavy hitters on projects. Hugely influential, Deren was the first filmmaker to win a Guggenheim fellowship and paved the way for future boundary-pushing filmmakers such as Stan Brakhage and David Lynch.

This forum will include three of Deren’s films: At Land (1944), Ritual in Transfigured Time (1946), and her masterpiece, Meshes of the Afternoon (1943).
