Drawn directly from West African folk tales, writer-director Michel Ocelot’s 1998 animated film is the tale of an extraordinary boy named Kirikou born into a village held hostage by an evil sorceress. The brave and wise little boy solves the mysteries of the sorceress Karaba’s powers, and confronts the source of his village’s pain.

Winner of 11 film festivals’ best feature/animated film awards from 1999 to 2000, “Kirikou and the Sorceress” features animation inspired by the paintings of Henri Rousseau, as well as original music by Youssou N'Dour.

JCAS Presents: Mean Streets (1973)

Sunday November 14th · 7:30 - 10:30pm

Starring Robert DeNiro and Harvey Keitel, “Mean Streets” was Martin Scorsese’s first feature-film of his own design. Keitel plays Charlie, a small-time hood living in New York City’s Little Italy and struggling to work his way up the ranks of a local mob. Life is complicated by his family’s disapproval of his epileptic girlfriend, and by the reputation-ruining debt his friend Johnny Boy (De Niro) has racked up with a loan shark.

After the film’s release, DeNiro won the National Society of Film Critics award for Best Supporting Actor for his role. In 1997, the Library of Congress selected “Mean Streets” for preservation in the United States Film Registry, and the American Film Institute nominated it for one of the Top 100 Movies of all time.

Directed by the legendary John Ford, and starring John Wayne, “The Searchers” tells the story of a Civil War veteran who spends years looking for his abducted niece with his adopted nephew. This iconically scenic film has been lauded for beautiful cinematography, sparked controversy for difficult social themes, and been named both the “Greatest American Western of All Time” and “12th in the Top 100 Greatest Movies Of All Time” by the American Film Institute.

Come see the landmark John Ford film which has influenced a variety of filmmakers for decades, including Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, John Milius, Wim Wenders, Jean-Luc Goddard, and George Lucas.

Director Shinya Tsukamoto's film, 'Tetsuo, The Iron Man,' is the dark, surrealistic tale of a businessman (Tomorowo Taguchi) who accidentally runs down a man with a fetish for implanting scrap metal into his body (played by the director). Soon afterward, he begins eerily morphing into a hybrid man-machine, accompanied by twisted, metal-related nightmares. Perhaps his nemesis is not in fact dead, but is somehow masterminding and guiding his rage and frustration-fueled transformation. Now, the businessman must track down the man he thought he killed before the horrific metamorphosis is complete.

James Whale’s 1931 film, ‘Frankenstein,’ is a classic of American horror. Loosely based on the novel by Mary Shelley, this iconic work star Colin Clive as Dr. Henry Frankenstein, Mae Clarke as his fiancée, and Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster.

Unbeknownst to his love, young scientist Dr. Henry Frankenstein, aided by his hunch-backed assistant, has been building a monster made of spare parts. But no one is prepared, not even the doctor, when the creature comes terrifyingly to life.

Come see one of the most memorable monster movies of all time as Sunday Night Film Forum screens a series of horror films between now and Halloween.

Sunday Night Film Forum: JCAS presents REC

‘REC’ follows a television reporter, Ángela Vidal, and her cameraman, Pablo, who cover the night shift in one of Barcelona's local fire stations for the fictional documentary television series While You're Asleep. When the firehouse receives a call from an old lady trapped in her house, they reach her building to hear horrifying screams -- which begin a long nightmare and a uniquely dramatic TV report.

Co-directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, ‘REC’ premiered at the 2007 Venice International Film Festival, and immediately inspired the American remake “Quarantine.” Come see an exciting piece of Spanish horror in JCAS’s series of horror films showing at Sunday Night Film Forum between now and Halloween.

Set in medieval Sweden, The Virgin Spring is the disturbing tale of a feudal landowner’s daughter brutally raped and murdered on the road to church. What form will fate take when the traveling killers unknowingly seek food and shelter in their victim’s home? Shocking for its day, The Virgin Spring was banned in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1962, and served as the inspiration for Wes Craven’s 1972 directorial debut The Last House on the Left.
