In celebration of National Volunteer Week, the 4^th Annual Hudson County Volunteer Expo will be held on Thursday, April 19, from noon through 8:00pm, in the Loew’s Jersey Theatre, at 54 Journal Square, across from the Journal Square PATH/Bus station.

Representatives from dozens of Hudson County non-profit organizations in need of volunteer assistance will be there.  Attendees to this Free Expo will be able to explore hundreds of local, short- and long-term Volunteer, Internship and Community Service opportunities, in a wide variety of service areas.  The public is invited to stop by – from brand new through experienced volunteers, as well as everyone just thinking about checking it out.

Throughout history, illuminated manuscripts were a way of reassessing important stories, commemorating words in vibrant colors and gilded gold pages. The end results were unique and beautiful, and made the people reading these stories feel more connected to them. In contemporary popular culture, our stories are culled from movies, television, and the Internet. We supplement our selves by quoting and taking comfort from this new scripture.

By representing ourselves with words from specific eras, we are also commemorating the time and places that we are from. My work collects some of my own most interesting and important words picked up in mass media through my lifetime. In these pieces, words spoken by people such as Rowdy Roddy Piper, Donna Reed, Owen Wilson, Nora Ephron, and Charles Nelson Reilly are commemorated in sparkling glitter and LED lights.

Hoboken's Monthly Gallery Walk Sunday, April 15, 2012 marks the kickoff to a new monthly art event in Hoboken, "3rd Sundays: Hoboken s Monthly Gallery Walk".  Occurring on the third Sunday of each month from 2 to 6 pm, nine galleries and art spaces around Hoboken are participating in the festivities.  With special events and receptions in a coordinated tour de force, 3rd Sundays will highlight the work of local, regional and international artists. Elements & Emotions Opening reception:  April 28, 5-8PM The exhibition "Elements and Emotions", featuring the work of Leslie Rubman, Douglas Smith, and Abby Levine, will open at the HOB'ART CO-OPERATIVE GALLERY, 720 Monroe Street, Hoboken, NJ starting April 28 and continuing until May 20th.  The exhibit will be open to the public from April 28 through May 20, 2012. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays, 12 to 5PM and by appointment. Leslie Rubman's work in found and recycled objects speaks to the nostalgia of passing time---each piece carries a history of its own.  Douglas Smith's photographs provide an avenue which may induce or resurrect happiness, sadness, anger or metaphysical thoughts.  Abby Levine's wood wall reliefs appear toy-like, amusing, and non-threatening, but reveal a serious political message. At The Mile Square Theatre Hobart (Hobokens only non profit artists cooperative gallery) and Mile Square Theatre are presenting a new show 'TIME'. All the works in this show explore the concept of time past present and future. This theme was chosen in conjunction with Mile Square Theatres new production THE PAVILLION a play dealing with the ravages of time. The artists exhibiting are: France Garrido, Roslyn Rose, Ann Kinney, Don Sichler,Miriam Untoria, and Jodi Zulueta. A variety of media and style will inspire the viewer in each piece. Works range from photography to paintings. The show will be on exhibit in the lobby/entryway of the Monroe Theatre Space starting April 18 at 6pm, until April  29, 2012. The art show will be open during theatre hours Thursday, Friday and Saturday 8 pm and Saturday and Sunday 3 pm. The opening night reception will be on April 18, 2012 from 6- 8 pm. Both Hob art Gallery and Mile Square Theatre are located in the Monroe Arts Center, 720 Monroe Street, the second floor, Hoboken, NJ. hob'art would like to extend special thanks to Chris O Connor the director of the theatre for his support and sponsorship.

Pro Arts Art Eat-Up is a food, drink and entertainment event with a twist; for a small donation, guests eat a delicious meal, enjoy good company and musical entertainment, and vote for the most worthy art proposal on the menu that night. All proceeds collected go to the winning project, which will be displayed at the next Art Eat-Up event. It is a great way to network, meet new people, have fun and provide support for a local art project. Art Eat-Up provides individual grants for artists, connects artists to each other and to the greater community and promotes the artistic livelihood of our community. Artists Click Here for 
Art Eat-Up is a grants process that gives an artist an unrestricted financial resource to realize a visual arts proposal, whether it is for one piece or an entire body of work. The grant may provide materials, equipment or even living expenses while the artist completes the project.
Art Eat-Up is grassroots funding at its best: donations for the community dinner go directly to funding art-makers whose proposals draw the most votes from the diners.
The process is purposely simple: Anyone can submit a proposal to Arts Eat-Up. Community participation in the grant selection process is the key: through this process we hope to stimulate and support experimental, critical and imaginative projects that may not be eligible for formal funding.
Art Eat-Up connects artists with artists, artists with the community, and the community with each other during Art Eat-Up dinners. It provides artists the opportunity to begin marketing their work before it is made. It creates momentum and awareness for art projects promoted during the event and possibly realized with the help of the Art-Eat-Up grant.
How it Works
Art Eat-Up event. Entrance will provide each person with one ballot and dinner with musical entertainment and beverages. Diners view a variety of proposed artworks and art projects. Each diner can cast one vote on the project they would like to see awarded a grant. After dinner, ballots will be counted and the art proposal receiving the most votes will be awarded the money raised through entrance donations (minus expenses and a portion to second and third prize).
The grant money is awarded to the winning artist or organization without limitations on how they use the grant money. Artists can take home the money that same evening. Documentation of the finalized project will be on display at the next Art Eat-Up, as well as other venues, including the web, informing the community of the progress and completion of each winning project.

Secrets, Love, a play by Summer Dawn Hortillosa

Original drama "Secrets; Love" will premiere in Hoboken, N.J., (3/22) before its New York City performance in the 10th annual Downtown Urban Theater Festival (3/28).

SYNOPSIS:

Summer Dawn Hortillosa's "Secrets; Love" is a tale set in a modern city about crimes of passion and the nature of love – how we feel it, how we express it and how it can be a powerful secret when hidden.

The play opens with a diverse neighborhood dealing with the recent kidnapping of two members of their Filipino community – Rizalia Salem (Siouxsie Suarez), the wife of Marcus Salem (Stan Vidal), and Marcus’s best friend Marton (Clarence Ilanan).

When their next-door neighbor Diego Carbonell (Jean-Pierre Mestanza) hears mysterious, terrifying sounds coming from their house, he realizes the truth may be darker than anyone suspects. Together with the Salems’ daughter Luz (Liliane Wolf), he puts the pieces together and discovers the lengths some would go to for love.

A company of three generations of African American women with hattitude and one man form the cast of Crowns, a moving and celebratory musical play. The music, a combination of African tribal music, Hip-Hop, and gospel moves the story in which hats become a springboard for an exploration of black history and identity as seen through the eyes of a young black woman who has come down South after her brother is killed in Brooklyn. Hats are everywhere and the characters use the hats to tell tales concerning everything from the etiquette of hats to their historical and contemporary social functioning.
