MECA is an international foundation that promotes contemporary art from the Middle East. Conceived as a cultural hub for artists, activists and scholars, MECA presents a unique range of programs including exhibitions, workshops, lectures as well as film and video screenings.
MECA is the vision of Eugene Lemay, Yigal Ozeri, David Wakstein and Said Abu Shakra; as members of the international art community with roots in Israel and Palestine, the four have witnessed first-hand the social, political and economic strife encompassing this territory. With a focus on mediation and critical discourse, MECA offers a neutral ground for artists to engage in collaborative processes.
Working directly with artists and institutions from the Middle East, MECA is a unique epicenter for cultural exchange, providing a forum for the many voices that make up this beautiful, complicated region.

Mana Contemporary, an all inclusive arts complex, has combined forces with Artists Wanted and artist Joshua Kirsch to create a groundbreaking challenge. Artists Wanted, a Brooklyn based organization, spots emerging artists offering them various forms of support and exposure. Kirsch is a Jersey based kinetic sculptor. His piece, Sympathetic Resonance, is going to be installed at Mana Contemporary in early March and we are proposing a challenge.
We invite musicians of any genre to schedule a time to come to Mana Contemporary and immerse themselves in the spindly instrument to make music using our premium recording equipment for both the visual and audio components. Once recorded, the musicians can upload their work directly onto the Artists Wanted Page. Once entered, the musician has a chance to win $1,000. and most assuredly, plenty of exposure. Keep your eyes open for new footage and schedule your time to come in and test your ability to adapt and create.

“The Colcha Project,” curated by Doris Cacoilo and Jeanne Brasile is being presented at the Walsh Gallery. The traveling exhibition is an ongoing project that uses crochet as a catalyst for bringing people together in collaborative modes of creativity and in exploration of culture and community. In the Portuguese tradition, colcha (quilts) are crocheted for and included in a woman’s bridal chest and may be handed down through generations. “The Colcha Project” was developed by Cacoilo as a way to share this tradition with others, inviting guests to participate in the creation of new colcha while visiting the gallery. Each iteration of the project results in a new quilt, which shall be on display in subsequent exhibitions. The documentation of making each quilt also becomes part of “The Colcha Project” as each participant adds their story to its history.

In addition to the colcha that have been made, a quilt in progress will be on display in the gallery and visitors will be encouraged to contribute to its making. Each Sunday between the hours of 1pm and 5pm while “The Colcha Project” is on view in the Walsh Gallery, visitors are invited to join the curators and other members of the group to crochet, share their stories and become part of the “The Colcha Project.” Yarn and needles will be provided for those who do not have their own. A potluck lunch will be served each Sunday. Participants are encourage to bring food and stitches to share. Beginners are highly encouraged to come and learn.

_gaia is looking for new members to join our artist collective and our shared studio space. Studio rent is very inexpensive ($150/month - 1 year commitment.) If you are looking for an artist community and an inexpensive artist studio, this may be a good place for you. In addition to participating in the organization's events (voluntarily) the members of _gaia share a large studio space. We encourage a highly collaborative environment and respectful and considerate sharing of the studio - which includes a photography darkroom.

We are especially looking for artists and activists who may help in growing _gaia as an organization. Willingness to share graphic design abilities, business management skills, grant-writing, organizing, accounting and general administrative help is highly encouraged. Studio members are required to attend a weekly meeting of the _gaia collective on Tuesday nights.

Please join us  at 7:30 for the regular monthly meeting of the Riverview Neighborhood Association. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Be our Valentine and come out for the regular monthly meeting of RNA tonight. Our guest this month is Katie Sheehan, from the Journal Square CSA(Community Supported Agriculture) who will talk about the benefits of the CSA and provide registration details. We will also continue our brainstorming process from the January meeting to see how else we can create positive change in our neighborhood in 2012. February is also the month when we open up the annual nominations for the RNA executive board. Nominations will remain open until the March meeting when the election will take place.

In keeping with our 2012 theme, please bring new socks or underpants to the meeting that will be donated to The Hoboken Shelter. We will also accept unopened toiletry items or non-perishable food for St. Lucy's Shelter.

From the Road is a 10-year survey of landscape paintings by artist Jennifer Krause Chapeau. Each painting depicts a landscape observed from the vantage point of a moving vehicle. The o...bjects of her attention range from the American Southwest to the French countryside. Her paintings are as much about the passing of time as they are about light, and its changing affects, on the terrain.

To walk like a hunter through the woods is not in Krause Chapeau’s temperament. She does not specialize in majestic scenes of nature; she prefers sundry roadside scenes. The land is not wild, idyllic, or hospitable, but fleeting. These vistas are temporary, on the verge of disappearing, as she bounds down the highway.

This series of paintings is based on the artist’s personal snapshots that were found in drawers, folders, and manila envelopes, many of which are 14 years old or more. She relies on spontaneity to choose what subjects to capture. There is not a direct tie to a particular landscape, but intuitive response to what she sees. Krause Chapeau is a roadrunner and her domain is the highway, which may seem odd for a landscape painter.

Like many Americans, her experience of nature tends to be mediated through nostalgia or another source, like photography—not direct experience. As a landscape painter, her challenge is not to endure subzero temperatures and blackfly-infested summers to create a representational scene, but to suggest motion and light: landscape as moving target, all soft focus and subtle blur.

Seeing a landscape in motion was a revelation for her. Speed eliminated detail, reducing entire scenes to color and light. “I think the solitude of driving alone for long periods allows your mind to really wander,” says Krause Chapeau. “The compositions and textures are constantly changing and flowing one into another while driving. It is a fascinating visual experience for me.”

At first glance, Krause Chapeau’s unadorned landscapes can strike the viewer as clear-eyed depictions of nature. A lazy mountain lounges on a desolate patch of land in twilight, as in “New Mexico Plain.” A chorus line of pine trees skinny-dips in autumnal sunlight, as in “Fleeting Fall.” On repeated viewings, her work becomes more complex and engaging, as it hovers between conventional representation and minimalist abstraction. For example, in the paintings “Morning Frost” or “French Plain,” she sees the landscape as a geometric division of space, sensuously worked surface, and luminous color.

Unlike photorealist painters, Krause Chapeau uses photographs as a starting point rather than as a model to be meticulously copied as an end unto itself. She is interested in the process of applying paint to canvas not only as a means of conveying information but also to embody a poetic force.

To view these paintings is to exist in a place between hopeful anticipation and regret. A roadside is not a definite location, but something that is neither here nor there, a thing between destination points. Her photographs of the landscape provide her an outlet to ruminate on memory, place, and time. The blurry images of her paintings are an appropriate metaphor to suggest time and motion, but they also highlight the sensuality of paint.

The artist, starry-eyed and mesmerized, staring through a car window to the frozen fields, and beyond, as the terrain continuously unfolds like a cinema reel.

Jennifer Krause Chapeau (b. 1962) received her B.F.A. from University of Michigan, School of Art and Design, in 1984; and attended the Studio and Stage Design Forum, in New York City, from 1985—1987. Krause Chapeau’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States. She is an official member of the United Scenic Artists Local 829, 1987—present. She lives in Jersey City, New Jersey.

During the month of February, America directs its attention to the lives and historical contributions of Americans of African decent.  The “Afrocentricity” exhibition at        
LITM-Lounge and Gallery Space will showcase the collection of works by Darin DeField
who has established himself as one of the most influential figures of the art and culture scene in Jersey City.

Darin DeField is best known for his mixed media collage art; working with cut paper and mixed media elements that explore race, gender, sexuality, and identity.  His most acclaimed works are his “Head Series”.  Many of these heads seem to be fixed representations of indigenous tribal masks and many can be interpreted as spiritual leaders, masters and gurus that are derived from African sculpture as archaeological artifacts being recovered.

LITM-Lounge and Gallery Space, located in Historic Downtown Jersey City, is a popular neighborhood destination that hosts monthly art exhibitions by local and international artists.

"I shoot sites, mostly in Jersey City and I embroider into them," said Loughlin. "I capture sites of communal or social interest - a lot of times they're not pretty. I call them 'city urban weavings,' because it felt like i was telling a tale."
The exhibit will also feature collages and sculpture by Pat Lay. Loughlin compared Lay's work to woven rugs.
"She looks at digital media as a beautiful aesthetic and makes great collages from it," said Loughlin. "She takes a motherboard, scans the imagery into a computer, they look almost like Aztec weavings."
Jewelry maker Kate Stillings will also show her work at the show, Loughlin said, adding that Woolpunk aims to help craftspeople display their work.

First Songs of Spring

Breaching Musical Boundaries in Jersey City

January 23, 2012: Ladies On The Mic presents “First Songs of Spring”
on Friday, February 3, 2012 a concert event celebrating the midway
point between winter and spring. The highlights of the event are two
bands that both breach musical genre boundaries by intertwining their
roots in classical music with jazz, rock & pop. Double-Breasted the
trio from New Jersey proclaims their music to be “Couture Rock”. Band
members Kristy Chmura on harp, Ardith Collins on cello and Josh
Bicknell on percussion all share in the songwriting and also share
being lead vocalist. The group met while studying for their Bachelors
of Music degrees at the College of New Jersey. They will be playing
songs from their new CD “Suit Yourself” which comes out February 11,
2012.

The feature band Rose & The Nightingale is a powerhouse quartet of
female virtuosi who each have accomplished solo careers and have
played in famed places such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Radio
City Music Hall and other well known venues across the world. Band
members include cellist, composer and vocalist Jody Redhage who is
equally experienced playing classical, new music, jazz, rock, pop and
improvised music. Jody has premiered over 100 works and has played
with Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding’s Chamber Music Society, Jay-Z,
Beyonce, Meatloaf, The Roots, Clay Aiken and Enya, to name a few. Sara
Caswell originally from Bloomington Indiana began playing violin at
age 5 and is now one of today’s foremost jazz violinists. She has
soloed numerous times with New York Pops Orchestra at Carnegie Hall
and also toured with Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding, violinist Mark
O’Connor and Darol Anger’s Four Generations of Jazz Violin.
Keyboardist and composer Laila Biali has showcased her original music
and arrangements at Carnegie Hall, the North Sea Jazz Festival and The
Cotton Club in Tokyo. Her latest album Tracing Light was JUNO
nominated for 2011 Vocal Jazz Album of the year. Jazz vocalist Leala
Cyr rounds out this amazing quartet with her stunning vocal
improvisation and solid trumpet playing. She has toured
internationally which includes performances playing in legendary
Milton Nascimento’s band, on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The View,
Jimmy Kimmel Live, and The David Letterman show.

travel to NYC or to NJPAC to hear music of this caliber. It's very
exciting to have these talented musicians coming to perform for us
on February 3rd at 7pm right here in Jersey City!”

PHC Setup and Event Location:  Bergenview, 654 Bergen Avenue, between Fairview and Jewett Avenues
Requested Volunteer Arrival Times:
>> Setup on Tuesday: 12 Noon
>> PHC on Wednesday: 8:30AM/8:45AM
The PHC event on Wednesday is open to Guests from 9:30am-1:30pm. 
The PHC location, Bergenview, is easily accessible by public transportation (email for more info.)
There is very limited on-site parking (enter from Fairview Ave.)
Street Count Meet-Up Location is 118 Summit Avenue, at Gardner Ave., (between Jewett & Belmont Avenues)
Street Count Arrival Request is 7:30PM at 118 Summit
Please dress very casually and very comfortably for all of these activities, and warmly for the night tme Street Count. 
Project Homeless Connect (PHC) is a one-day, one-stop event on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, to serve Homeless individuals and families, providing warm outerwear, thermals, socks, breakfast, hot lunch, information and referrals for vital services, hygiene kits, medical screening, HIV screening, haircuts, and more. It is organized by the Hudson County Alliance to End Homelessness (HCAEH), a collaboration between local government, non-profits and the business sector, and takes place in coordination with the County's annual Point in Time (PIT) Count of the Homeless. Volunteer participation is essential to making PHC a success!
