Big Dig call for volunteers

Please consider volunteering on National Make A Difference Day, Saturday October 27^th  for “The Big Dig.”  Volunteers will be planting 30,000 spring bulbs throughout Jersey City, and we are specifically seeking help with planting @ the block long Street Art Mural located on route 139 between Baldwin and Oakland Avenues.

Volunteers are needed from 9am-12pm, with a volunteer luncheon and awards ceremony held afterwards at Liberty Science Center.

Spreading the word about the spread of disease

The Bubonic Plague once wiped out a third of Europe’s population in less than a decade. The "Spanish Flu" Pandemic killed 40 million people in a single year. Could such disasterous diseases ever strike again? The answer is yes, if we are not vigilant. From SARS to AIDS to common 24-hour viruses, controlling the spread of infectious diseases is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today.

At Infection Connection, you’ll come to understand how the choices we make on a daily basis – as individuals and a society – contribute to the rise and fall of infectious diseases. You’ll explore interactions between humans and microbes, learn about emerging diseases and see how science develops tools and technologies to prevent and treat infections. You can even conduct microbiology and epidemiology experiments in our very own laboratory.
And kids, watch out for the giant blue nose! Why? You'll find out! (Yuck! Cover your mouth when you sneeze!) Infection Connection will help keep you and your family healthy all year round.

HUBBLE TELESCOPE AT LIBERTY SCIENCE CENTER, Imax theater

The Hubble Space Telescope, perhaps the most important new scientific tool since Galileo invented the telescope, produces images that are astonishingly beautiful and often deeply
mysterious. Seen on the nation's largest IMAX Dome screen, 88 feet in diameter, they are positively mind-boggling. Viewers will be awed by sights formerly witnessed only by astronauts and astronomers. They'll see stunning, large-scale images of some of the most distant features in the universe such as star "nurseries," unimaginably distant galaxies, and glowing nebulae located in the deepest part of the cosmos, up to 13 billion light years away from Earth.

The Polar Express IMAX at Liberty Science Center

The Polar Express pulls into the nation's largest IMAX Dome Theater for a limited engagement, just in time for the holidays. The heart-warming film tells of a boy who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole on a journey of self-discovery. Based on the Caldecott medal-winning children's book written by Chris Van Allsburg, The Polar Express is directed by Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis and stars two-time Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks.

Now in its fourth year, the 12 Days of Science provide an exciting finish to the year with special family friendly activities that will make your holiday visit even more memorable!

Come to the Science Center between December 22 and January 2 (except for December 25) for all sorts of cool, winter-based activities: Funny Flavors Ice Cream Making, Insta-Snow, Mathemagician Art Benjamin, Bubblemania and much more! Schedules are subject to change without notice and space or supplies may be limited. Activities are available on a first come, first served basis. Most of the activities are free with paid admission but some require a sign up or extra fee, check activity details for more information.

Skyscraper! provides an unprecedented look at the planning, design, engineering and technology of these amazing structures – and their impact on human culture, the environment and even local weather patterns.

Whether you’re bravely walking a steel girder high above the exhibit floor, facing down jet-powered hurricane force winds to test a building design, or taking a quiet moment to reflect on the destruction of the World Trade Center, you’ll leave Skyscraper! with a new appreciation – and completely altered view – of the impressive skyline that surrounds us.

Soaring Structures

One may explore a cityscape that features large-scale images and information about the world’s most intriguing skyscrapers. Some are up to 30 feet tall!

Wind Tunnel

There is much to learn and explore at LSC. Find out about how wind tunnels are created with tall structures. In this exhibit one can change the wind speed, alter building models and see what happens when hurricanes blow. Weekday Hours: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Walk the Steel

Step out on a narrow steel beam 18 feet in the air and walk high above the gallery floor. There is no net, but like all construction workers in dangerous settings, you’ll wear a safety harness. Jersey City, NY -- Earth Week 2010: Liberty Science Center will herald an eco-friendly world with the introduction of Eco Boys and Girls brand earth-friendly educational animated characters created by visionary top model, fashion designer and artist, Maria Snyder, recognized for her green sensibility and innovative integration of recyclable materials into her designs.

On Saturday, April 24 at 2:00 p.m. Stellar celebrities will appear at Liberty Science Center to herald the Eco Boys and Girls Earth Week Celebration. Emlyn Koster, president and CEO, Liberty Science Center will emcee this special event. An environmental leader designated as keynote speaker will speak to the message of encouraging young people to take ownership of Planet Earth. Young people (ages kindergarten and up) will be able to participate in environmental discovery challenges as they explore diverse green exhibits in this highly innovative science museum.

The Eco Boys and Girls will premiere in a short animated film during Earth Week, April 22 to 29, 2010. The five brilliant, colorful large scale animated characters: Ernie Earth©, Lulu Love©, Patsy Peace©, Ray Recycle© and Sammy Sun©, will appear on large screens throughout Governor's Hall as they encourage children to explore Liberty Science Center’s environmentally informative exhibitions.
