The Riverview Farmers Market is Back!

The second season of the Riverview Farmers Market begins this Sunday, May 6th at 9AM in Riverview-Fisk Park (Palisade Ave bet. Griffith & Bowers) RNA is honored to be a sponsor of the market which is run by Farms in the City Heights. The market will be open each Sunday from May through October from 9:00am to 2:00pm. There will be a lot of special activities this week for the opening so please come out and support the market.

Your favorite food vendors from last season will be returning along with a few new ones. The vendors include Alstede Farms, Made with Love, Nature's Own, Saucy Sara's Salsa, Sassy Sweet Treats, Senor Snacks, Stella's Empanadas, and Vesco Foods (got a love those pickles). There are also some great non-food vendors to check out in the coming weeks--knife sharpening anyone? And Not Yo Mama's Crafts Fair will be at the market on July 1 and October 21st, so save those dates!

RNA will have a table at the market and we are again seeking volunteers to tend to it. Volunteering is easy and it is a great opportunity to meet people. To volunteer please email riverviewneighborhood@comcast.net.

exploring faerie-lands art opening

As artists we often delve into the realms of imagination, exploring the mythologies that permeate human culture. We cross boundaries into other worlds within or own minds, creating artwork to invite the viewer to share our visions. Humanity has been creating Faerielands from the very beginning. We have a need to explain the unknown. Even now, when most of us have a better understanding of the workings of the universe, these imaginary tales still have a powerful hold on us. We WANT to believe there is something dark lurking in the woods, we WANT to believe that a mirror can be a passage to another world, we WANT to believe there are spirits in the trees, we WANT to believe we can fly if only we believe hard enough, we WANT to believe in Faeries, Imps, Succubae, Gnomes, Elves, Mermaids... This exhibition includes work that expresses this exploration of humanity’s need to create stories of mysterious other worlds that intersect our own. Some are literal, others more interpretive. It has been two years since the Deepwater Horizon Explosion followed by the 4.1 million barrels of crude oil that poured into the Gulf of Mexico. BluePrint is a series of cyanotypes dealing with news coverage of the BP oil disaster of 2010. The reappearance of this work into the public eye serves the initial intention, commenting on the bombardment of news at the time, and the utter lack of news as the oil continues to linger in our oceans and the effects on the environment remain undetermined.

Art expert and top tour guide, Mary-Beth Shine will explain it all. From the South Bronx to Red Hook, the Lower East Side to Long Island City, Mary-Beth Shine's popular art tours have explored places you may not know about, as well as hidden gems right around the corner. This time Mary-Beth turns the spotlight to Downtown Jersey City. The tour will include stops at some of JC’s most interesting and inspiring hubs of art and expression.

Mary-Beth Shine holds a BA from the University of Massachusetts/Boston and an MA in Folk Art Studies from New York University. She has conducted tours and talks at the American Folk Art Museum, the Grey Art Gallery and Study Center, New York University, and galleries and museums throughout the five boroughs as an Art History/Appreciation Instructor in the Pre-College Program at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She has published in ArtJournal.

Curious Matter is an exhibition venue for contemporary visual art located in downtown Jersey City. Curious Matter is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the purposes of Curious Matter must be made payable to Fractured Atlas and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Be A Part Of The Show!

Friends of the Loew's Event Volunteers do everything from selling the tickets to making the popcorn to showing patrons to their seats and cleaning up the theatre afterwards. If you are interested in joining us this weekend or at any other event this season, email us at loewsjersey@gmail.com or call us at (201) 798-6055.

There will be an especially warm sense of camaraderie for those who help us in making sure the show does go on this weekend. As always, volunteers can bring a guest to help, pick a complimentary selection from our concession stand, and after the crowd is in and the film begins, they can enjoy the show. We do ask, however, that volunteers stay 30-40 minutes after the final show the help us clean up.

In celebration of National Volunteer Week, the 4^th Annual Hudson County Volunteer Expo will be held on Thursday, April 19, from noon through 8:00pm, in the Loew’s Jersey Theatre, at 54 Journal Square, across from the Journal Square PATH/Bus station.

Representatives from dozens of Hudson County non-profit organizations in need of volunteer assistance will be there.  Attendees to this Free Expo will be able to explore hundreds of local, short- and long-term Volunteer, Internship and Community Service opportunities, in a wide variety of service areas.  The public is invited to stop by – from brand new through experienced volunteers, as well as everyone just thinking about checking it out.

Throughout history, illuminated manuscripts were a way of reassessing important stories, commemorating words in vibrant colors and gilded gold pages. The end results were unique and beautiful, and made the people reading these stories feel more connected to them. In contemporary popular culture, our stories are culled from movies, television, and the Internet. We supplement our selves by quoting and taking comfort from this new scripture.

By representing ourselves with words from specific eras, we are also commemorating the time and places that we are from. My work collects some of my own most interesting and important words picked up in mass media through my lifetime. In these pieces, words spoken by people such as Rowdy Roddy Piper, Donna Reed, Owen Wilson, Nora Ephron, and Charles Nelson Reilly are commemorated in sparkling glitter and LED lights.

Elements & Emotions Opening reception:  April 28, 5-8PM The exhibition "Elements and Emotions", featuring the work of Leslie Rubman, Douglas Smith, and Abby Levine, will open at the HOB'ART CO-OPERATIVE GALLERY, 720 Monroe Street, Hoboken, NJ starting April 28 and continuing until May 20th.  The exhibit will be open to the public from April 28 through May 20, 2012. At The Mile Square Theatre Hobart (Hobokens only non profit artists cooperative gallery) and Mile Square Theatre are presenting a new show 'TIME'. All the works in this show explore the concept of time past present and future. This theme was chosen in conjunction with Mile Square Theatres new production THE PAVILLION a play dealing with the ravages of time. The artists exhibiting are: France Garrido, Roslyn Rose, Ann Kinney, Don Sichler,Miriam Untoria, and Jodi Zulueta. A variety of media and style will inspire the viewer in each piece. Works range from photography to paintings. The show will be on exhibit in the lobby/entryway of the Monroe Theatre Space starting April 18 at 6pm, until April  29, 2012. The art show will be open during theatre hours Thursday, Friday and Saturday 8 pm and Saturday and Sunday 3 pm. The opening night reception will be on April 18, 2012 from 6- 8 pm. SAGE Hudson County is a program of Hudson Pride Connections Center and is an affiliate of the national SAGE organization based in New York. SAGE Hudson County seeks to build community, provide social avenues, and to shift the aging paradigm within the 50+ GLBTQ population. Hudson Pride provides access to important resources and referrals regarding health care, social services, and community activities.

SAGE meets every Thursday  7:00 -  8:00 pm. Snacks are provided.

About "Bill Cunningham New York" -- 

The “Bill” in question is octogenarian New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham. For decades, while dodging Manhattan traffic on his bike, this cultural anthropologist has been obsessively and inventively chronicling fashion trends and high society charity soirées for the Times Style section in his columns “On the Street” and “Evening Hours.” 

Documenting uptown fixtures (Anna Wintour, Tom Wolfe, Brooke Astor, David Rockefeller—who all appear in the film out of their love for Bill), downtown eccentrics and everyone in between, Cunningham’s enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place and individual flair. In turn, Bill Cunningham New York is a delicate, funny and often poignant portrait of a dedicated artist whose only wealth is his own humanity and unassuming grace.
