exploring faerie-lands art opening
As artists we often delve into the realms of imagination, exploring the mythologies that permeate human culture. We cross boundaries into other worlds within or own minds, creating artwork to invite the viewer to share our visions. Humanity has been creating Faerielands from the very beginning. We have a need to explain the unknown. Even now, when most of us have a better understanding of the workings of the universe, these imaginary tales still have a powerful hold on us. We WANT to believe there is something dark lurking in the woods, we WANT to believe that a mirror can be a passage to another world, we WANT to believe there are spirits in the trees, we WANT to believe we can fly if only we believe hard enough, we WANT to believe in Faeries, Imps, Succubae, Gnomes, Elves, Mermaids... This exhibition includes work that expresses this exploration of humanity’s need to create stories of mysterious other worlds that intersect our own. Some are literal, others more interpretive. Not all actually show these other worlds, some just hint at the possibility of what could be around the corner. LITM, tuesday may 1, 7-10 pm, 140 Newark Ave, downtown JC |

May 4 - 25
Artist reception: Friday, May 4th 6-9pm
_gaia gallery
315 3rd Street
Jersey City, NJ 07302
It has been two years since the Deepwater Horizon Explosion followed by the 4.1 million barrels of crude oil that poured into the Gulf of Mexico. BluePrint is a series of cyanotypes dealing with news coverage of the BP oil disaster of 2010. The reappearance of this work into the public eye serves the initial intention, commenting on the bombardment of news at the time, and the utter lack of news as the oil continues to linger in our oceans and the effects on the environment remain undetermined.

At Curious Matter we've created an environment where every visitor feels comfortable enough to talk about art and ask questions. Mary-Beth brings that quality to entire neighborhood explorations and she makes it a tremendous lot of fun. Her tours are absolutely terrific and we have a community eager to engage with and talk about art." Raymond E. Mingst, Curious Matter, co-founder

As always, volunteers can bring a guest to help, pick a complimentary selection from our concession stand, and after the crowd is in and the film begins, they can enjoy the show. We do ask, however, that volunteers stay 30-40 minutes after the final show the help us clean up.

"Then you, my dear friend, are a damn fool"
and other illuminated manuscripts by Melissa MacAlpin
April 06 - 27
Artist reception: Saturday, April 14th 6-9pm
_gaia gallery
315 3rd Street
Jersey City, NJ 07302
Throughout history, illuminated manuscripts were a way of reassessing important stories, commemorating words in vibrant colors and gilded gold pages. The end results were unique and beautiful, and made the people reading these stories feel more connected to them. In contemporary popular culture, our stories are culled from movies, television, and the Internet. We supplement our selves by quoting and taking comfort from this new scripture.
By representing ourselves with words from specific eras, we are also commemorating the time and places that we are from. My work collects some of my own most interesting and important words picked up in mass media through my lifetime. In these pieces, words spoken by people such as Rowdy Roddy Piper, Donna Reed, Owen Wilson, Nora Ephron, and Charles Nelson Reilly are commemorated in sparkling glitter and LED lights.

Chillfest Bill Cunningham photographer
Chillfest, the mostly gay and lesbian film series of Jersey City,
presents the documentary film, "Bill Cunningham New York."
WHAT: "Bill Cunningham New York" at Chillfest in Downtown Jersey City
WHEN: Sunday, April 15, at 4:15pm. Doors open at 4:00pm for drinks, food, and socializing.
WHERE: LITM, 140 Newark Avenue (1/2 block from the Grove Street PATH station)
TICKETS: $10 door, $7 advance at www.chillfest.org
About "Bill Cunningham New York" --
The “Bill” in question is octogenarian New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham. For decades, while dodging Manhattan traffic on his bike, this cultural anthropologist has been obsessively and inventively chronicling fashion trends and high society charity soirées for the Times Style section in his columns “On the Street” and “Evening Hours.”
Documenting uptown fixtures (Anna Wintour, Tom Wolfe, Brooke Astor, David Rockefeller—who all appear in the film out of their love for Bill), downtown eccentrics and everyone in between, Cunningham’s enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place and individual flair. In turn, Bill Cunningham New York is a delicate, funny and often poignant portrait of a dedicated artist whose only wealth is his own humanity and unassuming grace.
From the review in "The New York Times" --
"...in “Bill Cunningham New York,” Richard Press’s captivating and moving portrait of a singular man and a passing era, it’s possible to view what Mr. Cunningham does as the flip side of war photography, and not entirely unrelated. He seeks out and captures humanity amid the maelstrom of life, looking for what Harold Koda, chief curator at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, describes in the film as “ordinary people going about their lives, dressed in fascinating ways.” In these fleeting and otherwise unseen or unremarked moments, Mr. Cunningham finds something creative, life-affirming and free, and preserves it forever."

The Brunswick Window
158 Brunswick St, Jersey City, NJ
March 1-April 15
Dictionary Orchestras is Roger Sayre's whimsical exploration
of what Kurt Vonnegut refers to as a karass: "...teams that do God's Will, without ever discovering what they are doing" (Cats Cradle, 1963).
The series prompts musings on exclusion, visual trends, racial climates, and the progression of time.
