San Francisco in the 1970s became a battleground between an emerging, vibrant gay movement and the communities who felt threatened by thisnew gay political muscle. In 1978, the struggle came to a head when San Francisco's progressive Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk—one of the first openly gay elected officials anywhere—were murdered in cold blood by Dan White, a former City Supervisor, fireman, and police officer.

The community's response—ranging from silent vigil to violent riots—helped define gay politics as we know it. THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK tells an emotional story of communities in conflict, centered on the last year of Harvey Milk's life.

The Chillfest Second Sunday Series runs monthly from October through June 2010 and offers gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender-themed films to Jersey City and the region.

Last band standing

4th Street Arts & Music will host a variety of musical acts from New Jersey and New York as they compete at the Last Band Standing, a battle of the bands event, at Parlay Studios Sunday, Aug. 22., 2 -6 pm

Eight acts will compete in a bracketed musical tournament consisting of three competitive rounds. All participants will be voted on by a panel of judges and by the audience at the end of each round. At the end of the evening, prizes will be awarded to the winning bands.

Admission to Last Band Standing will be $5 at the door, with home cooked food and drinks available upon entry. This event is also a fundraiser for the 4th Street Art and Music Festival taking place in Jersey City Sat, Oct. 2.

Some of the participating bands include:
In Musth, Big Boss, Los Huevos, Easter Vomit, Plastiq Passion, Prison Pretty, Shayfer James and more TBA.

The judges include:
Eddie Applebaum from The Greenhouse – A music manager for over 12 years, Eddie has worked with some of the most popular rock bands of our generation, including LIVE, Sunny Day Real Estate, Local H, Morningwood, Tracy Bonham, Strangefolk, Earl Greyhound, The Bravery among others. Eddie has achieved much success in the last few years, especially in the realm of music licensing, where he has done over 150 placements for his bands' music, including 4 national commercial campaigns, over 30 network TV shows, 20+ video games, and a long list of feature films, most notably the placement of Morningwood's track "New York Girls" in the film Sex & The City: The Movie.

Anthony Fantano from The Needle Drop – A public radio host, contributor to NPR Music's Song of the Day, and music editor for Scene Magazine. He started the music blog the Needle Drop in 2007, and has been growing a YouTube audience with his eccentric music reviews since 2009. When he's not listening to music, he's talking about it, dreaming about it, and making it. Hence, he is the Internet's busiest music nerd.

"Pistol" Pete Kaufmann from RockinLifeStyle – A professional musician, writer, and motivational speaker has toured America as drummer for Amandla- led by Claude Coleman Jr. of Ween, aso contributes as a writer for Modern Drummer Magazine, and is the owner of Rockin Lifestyle- a motivation company dedicated to creative people and creative living.

Lindsay Klein – With many TV/Film appearances including : MTV's "Singled Out", Comedy Central's "Strangers With Candy" and "Upright Citizens Brigade", HBO's "The Sopranos", feature films such as "Finding Forrester" and "Center Stage", and various indie films including "Home Sweet Hoboken" starring Ben Gazzara, Lindsay has been part of the entertainment industry for some time. After interning for the Howard Stern Show, Lindsay Klein found her ultimate niche, radio. Authors often “stuff” their work to make it more illusive or fantastic, and popular genres like magical realism and hysterical realism, as well as multimodal or hybrid texts, demonstrate this: we have many settings, myriad characters, a wealth of contexts in which to see the same situation. We will delve into the advantages of showing the reader these diverse facets, enjoying some ...examples in the work of Jorge Luis Borges, Robert Coover, John Dos Passos, and others. An optional writing exercise will be assigned.

Jersey City Kickball Rules

This event is a benefit for to children's organization, Have fun like kids just don't act like a baby or bully.

No Bouncies. Pitched balls may not be fired down towards home plate and shall not be excessively bouncy. Teams can force a change in pitcher once an inning by shouting "we want a pitcher, not a belly itcher (three times)".
Kickers must kick the ball behind or on home plate. Kickers can not come into contact with a ball before it reaches home plate. Balls hit in front of the plate are considered foul.

No Bunting. A ball must reach half the distance to first base to be considered fair. Bunt Balls are foul. 2 Foul Balls and you are out.

A Runner is out by force, but can also be called out if hit with the ball. Hitting a player in the face or any no-touch region will be considered safe and be awarded the base. Intentionally hitting a player in the face or jewels with the ball will lead to an expulsion from the game or tournament.

One Base Per Overthrow Balls that miss the base for a force out or miss the runner allow the player (and any other runners) to advance one extra base only. Runners can not advance when the pitcher has control of the ball on the mound.

No Leading “ Players may only leave the base once the ball is kicked. Players that advance before the ball is put into play will be considered out.

Teams must have minimum of eight players, and a maximum of 10 players on the field. Players substituted during a game can not return to play.
Teams must have at least 4 women. Teams with less than 4 women will be penalized 2 runs per women difference in team rosters. For example : if one team fields 4 women and the opposing team fields 2 women. The team with the least amount of women will begin with the score of -4 runs.

Each Game consists of 5 innings or 45 minutes. Tie games shall be decided by sudden-death, best of three rock-paper-scissors play.

Each Team has 10 kickers per inning. The inning is finished when the last batter is called out or the ball is placed on home plate. If a team has less than 10 players, the kicking order will continue through the top of the order. The first kicker for each inning is the corresponding kicker for each inning. For instance, the first kicker in the order kicks first in the first inning, the Third kicker in the order kicks first in the third inning. Capice ?

Weather Permitting, players who reach first base are awarded with a water balloon that can be used for defensive base running. It is recommended that each team have a first base coach to hand a water balloon to a player who shall reach past first base on their initial kick. Players who reach second or third base without getting a water balloon when passing first shall not be provided with a water balloon. Water Balloons should also not be throw at a persons face. While supplies last. No waterguns or Artic Freezers please.

Shoes and Attire - Players can not wear any type of cleats or boots or any such item or accessories that may cause injury to another player or the kickball.

Big Ball Inning : We will be using a 8.5 regulation kickball for most of the game. But one inning during the game, a 16 in mega ball will be used, the kicking team chooses when.

Double or Nothing Scoring: One time per game a kicker may signal “double or nothing” the call must be acknowledged by the referee and the opposing teams captain or pitcher. During this play any runs that score shall count as double points. However, if any runner is out during the play, all of the runner are out and no runs shall count.

SPORTSMANSHIP : The referees' word in final. Excess arguing with the referee will lead to first a warning (yellow card) and then second ejection (red card).



Alcohol is prohibited in the park. The white star is right across the street. There is to be no smoking on the field or in the dugout either.

About 8 years ago or so (guys? accuracy?) some friends and I decided to ...have a picnic. There was about 12 of us in Holmdel Park in Central Jersey. It became an annual thing, and the past two years there's probably been over 100 people throughout the day, now in Liberty State Park. I invite my friends, they invite their friends, you get the idea. The cool thing is everyone shows up with something. You bring a bag of chips or 3, they bring some salad, those guys bring a watermelon.. tents, chairs, drinks, games, children, animals... bring whatever ya want. If you're gonna bring booze, keep it on the DL cause I don't feel like getting a ticket.

This should be a good time dude... always has been in the past.

In 2005, her piece “Diverse Reflections”, a digitally colorized image, was the cover of The Jersey Gaze. That piece highlighted Beth’s enthusiasm for moving along with the times by incorpor...ating digital imaging into some of her pieces. But no matter how the final art is laid out, her work still begins with the basics, a camera, a roll of color film and Beth’s never ending search for those treasures that she so willingly allows us to see through her eyes."

Rammellzee's thought process was one of the many held accountable for taking the thought processes involved in graffiti lettering, and pushing them to new limits through deconstruction and reconstruction of the Roman alphabet...,... beyond the "formal" styles we are familiar with seeing on a day to day basis.
