First annual "Jersey City- Land of the Freeform Arts and Music Festival" is a celebration of the artistic community in the area. It represents the cultural diversity and creativity that thrives locally. The sponsor, Peace by Piece Studio, is a local organization who is giving back to the community through various events such as this. The area the festival is taking place was designated as the Riverview Arts District, but was never codified in the zoning department. This festival will bring light to the...

“Binary Dreams” brings forth a fusion of the technical brain and the intuitive in the form of new innovative arts that depict the vast and transpersonal experiences of dreams. With the advent of new technology emerging and novelty dropping new seeds constantly into the oceans of the mind, the abstractions of dreaming are constantly fractalling out into an explosion of new diverse realities that become available for exploration when one abandons the senses to sleep and plunges inwards. Vincent Zambrano and Kaliptus are bringing back the raw dream elements and translating them out into the mundane world. The art works themselves vary in style and medium but work together like a perfect blend of opposite dualities. They create an overall effect of wholeness, diversity and surreal futurism.

Abstractions
The artist uses a technique called video performance painting. First video images are projected onto a blank canvas.
Next the artist begins painting the moving video images. Each brush stroke creates a different visual layer for the viewer.
The viewers are not only seeing the projections they are seeing the paint create a different image all together.
Olivia's  paintings  are the out come of this visual layering process.

Becoming Visible
The linear patterns in Becoming Visible were inspired by wood carvings and bronze statues from Benin, West Africa.
Many of these works depict the king or "Oba" of Benin with contours of his face.Traditionally some ethnic groups used these lines
to identify each other after they had been separated.
In this case I place the lines on an image of my own face to express empathy for the families of innocent African American men whose lives
were taken unjustly.

Cold in the Sun
"is a new media piece on reflections with my father's progressing dementia. "cold in the sun" was one of the phrases
I would find him mumbling to himself.
In this video  I reenact some of the phrases my father would mumble while sitting
around the house as if they were a series
of flashbacks.
Through the use of Delaunay Triangulation the video gradually abstracts itself as my father gets
deeper into his memories.
Delaunay Triangulation is a method of computational geometry that can be used to model
complex surfaces without having to measure the exact dimensions of all surface points.
It is typically used to model terrains where only some points of altitude are known.
     
In this case I assume the role of my father and attempt to reenact some of his mannerisms.
Although I did not know much about him I have a few data points form which to model his behavior."

Panepinto Galleries is pleased to present Vertical Repose, a group exhibition curated by Emily Santangelo.

Vertical painting is a process of high drama, finishing in a crescendo, simultaneously exhausting and exhilarating us in its formal orientation. Its theater of aspiration, the sense of reaching vs. acceptance and surrender, the act of jumping and diving or traveling up and down in our eye movement, the unknown above us as well as the somewhat better known at or below our feet, all play a critical role in the process, the creation and the experience of the vertical work. Unlike horizontal imagery, which inescapably speaks of landscape and the reclining figure—in which the observer holds a passive role—the vertical image demands active participation. It pushes back at the viewer, “mirroring” the body, creating an internal space for that audience to engage in a reciprocal dialogue, one that mirrors the surface while allowing the projection of one's individual history onto the image. 

The work exhibited in Vertical Repose aims to elicit such articulations of verticality. Pulling from a variety of mediums and artistic approaches, the exhibition does not seek to fuse together an underlying conceptual premise geared towards a contextual narrative but rather, to use the orientation of the frame as a staging area for a particular and predetermined type of aesthetic contemplation. It is through this vertical dimension that we experience the work of art and in turn, ourselves.

Featured artists include John Baldessari, Andrea Belag, Kate Carey, John D'Agostino, Rachel Friedberg, Stephen Gross, Charlie Hewitt, Alison Hildreth, Elizabeth T. Jones, Chris Pelletiere, Kara L. Rooney, Anthony Roselli and Richard Serra.

Jazz world fusion, Ladies on the Mic

Jazz Concert Brings Spice to Popular Art Space

September 4, 2012: Ladies on the Mic presents Jazz World Fusion on
Friday, September 14th at 7:30pm. Four New Jersey based jazz
performers bring their world-class talents to Art House Productions
for a free evening concert.

Headlining the evening will be Leala Cyr and Ricardo Vogt who together
blend picturesque vocals and a sensual guitar sound to create a unique
collaboration of music. Together since 2002, this pair has found a way
to combine American and Brazilian roots to form a new array of sound.
Cyr and Vogt arrange everything from Duke Ellington, to Antonio Carlos
Jobim, to Guinga. There is no surprise that this combination is an
amazing one with the incredible scat technique of Leala Cyr, who has
been busy touring with the Grammy award winning Esperanza Spalding’s
Radio Music Society and sensational accompaniment of Ricardo Vogt…it’s
a match made in jazz heaven!

Jazz vocalist and composer Laura Brunner is a songstress of incredible
artistic depth. Brunner fuses an eclectic blend of jazz harmony and
electric grooves with her use of popular songs, jazz standards, and
original compositions. Brunner has become a deeply committed educator,
dedicating her life to the preservation and promotion of American Jazz
and its history to future generations. She has shared the stage with
an extraordinary array of musicians such as Kurt Elling, Ellis
Marsalis, Sheila E., Esperanza Spalding, Riannon, Bryan Baker, and the
Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Brunner is currently in the process of
recording her debut album and can be seen performing in the Midwest,
New England, and New York City areas.

Rebecca Vallejo, a Jersey City resident originally from Madrid, Spain
comes from a family of singers and began performing in public at age
four. She has performed on stages in Brazil, Cuba, Germany, Belgium,
Great Britain and Spain. Her repertoire includes songs in Spanish,
English and Portuguese. With two albums under her belt Vallejo is
currently in production of recording her third CD, which will be
produced in Spain, Brazil and the US. Vallejo is a versatile and
innovative vocalist, known for combining her ancestral flamenco roots,
her deep love and understanding of Brazilian
music, with the language of jazz creating a sound that is truly unique.

Ladies On The Mic is a roaming event featuring female performers of
all ages and backgrounds with the purpose to support one another as we
develop as singers, writers, actors, readers and entertainers. Ladies
On The MIc hopes to enrich the cultural life of our community by
providing local residents and area visitors with this free and
accessible outlet for high-end entertainment and to showcase and
promote NJ residents that are internationally renowned talent who do
not get the chance to perform locally.

Art House Productions, is a pioneering force in the Jersey City arts
movement. Art House aims to support artists, encourage artistic growth
across all mediums, and foster a widespread appreciation for the arts

Shakespeare Season in JC

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Actors Shakespeare Company at New Jersey City University has announced its 2012-2013 Season, Flowers of Winter, which will begin in September and continue through June.  This marks the company’s 13th anniversary and its fifth season in residence at New Jersey City University, all under the stewardship of Producing Artistic Director Colette Rice.



The 2012-2013 Season, Flowers of Winter, will feature a spring main stage production and an ASC Lab presentation at the company’s home performance venue, NJCU’s West Side Theatre.  In addition, the company will present two free film screenings in NJCU’s Gothic Lounge.  For information about any Actors Shakespeare Company program or to purchase tickets call the box office at 201-200-2390 or visit ascnj.org.



““The Flowers of Winter” is inspired by a line from The Winter’s Tale,” said Ms. Rice. “Shakespeare’s deep connection with flowers and the natural world remind us of the cycles of loss and renewal, of the mixture of wild earthy comedy and deep spiritual tragedy which these plays bring to the stage.”



The Actors Shakespeare Company’s 2013 main stage production will be Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. A jealous tyrant, a queen on trial, two simple shepherds, young romance, a divine oracle, a singing con man, and one hungry, hungry bear make The Winter’s Tale a magical journey of loss, renewal, and the promise of spring.  Audience members are welcome to join an ASC artist 30 minutes before every show in the lobby for Bard Banter, a brief, "jumpstart" discussion about the play.  Bethany Reeves, director of ASC’s 2007 hit King John, will direct The Winter’s Tale, which will run Thursday, April 4 through Sunday, April 21, 2013.  Please visit ascnj.org for exact show times.  Main stage tickets are $30.00 for adults, $15.00 for students and senior citizens, and children under 15 pay their age.  Group sales are available.



On Sunday, December 9, Actors Shakespeare Company at NJCU will present The Wars of the Roses, an ASC Lab project created by the company’s resident artists.  ASC at NJCU  artists will meet in classes for several weeks to explore Shakespeare’s Henry VI and  Richard III, mining their epic stories of civil war and family retribution to create The Wars of the Roses.  The free, one-night-only presentation will also include a post show question-and-answer session with the actors on the process of bringing these texts to life.  Reservations are not required.



Shakespeare on Screen, ASC at NJCU’s free film series, will feature two classic Shakespeare-based films.  On Thursday, October 18, the series will feature Shakespeare-Wallah, Merchant/Ivory's 1965 film about a family troupe of English actors in India.  On Thursday, February 21, the series will feature Black Orpheus, Marcel Camus' 1959 retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth set during the time of Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro.  Both films will be shown in NJCU’s Gothic Lounge (Hepburn Hall, Room 202).  Reservations are not required.

Continuing last year’s successful expansion of ASC at NJCU’s educational programming, the company will again bring its popular classes to schools throughout Jersey City and Hudson County.   ASC at NJCU’s year-long, in-school drama program at A. Harry Moore School will continue for its fifth consecutive year.  Students from throughout northern New Jersey will continue to attend morning matinees of ASC at NJCU’s main stage productions and participate in question-and-answer sessions with the actors following each performance.



ASC at NJCU officially became the University’s theatrical company-in-residence in 2008, making NJCU only the fourth institution of higher education in New Jersey to be affiliated with a professional theatre company.  The collaboration between the company, which is in its 13th season, and NJCU began in 2005.  Since that time, NJCU and ASC at NJCU have partnered to present professional classical theatre to both the NJCU and wider Jersey City communities and NJCU faculty and students have been regularly involved in ASC productions and workshops.



ASC at NJCU works through the NJCU Foundation, a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Programming is made possible in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner organization of the National Endowment for the Arts, New Jersey City University, and contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations. ASC at NJCU is a proud member of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance.



Actors Shakespeare Company at NJCU’s main stage, the 140-seat West Side Theatre on the University campus, is conveniently located at 285 West Side Avenue between Culver and Audubon Avenues in Jersey City.  The Theatre is just minutes from Routes 440, 1-9, and I-78.  There is ample parking in the University’s adjacent lots on West Side Avenue.  The West Side Theatre is wheelchair accessible.  ADA accessible seating is available. Assisted listening devices and audio and large print programs are available free of charge at all performances.

PATERNHIJIDAD: PATERNITY OR THE MUTUAL INFLUENCE BETWEEN DANIEL AND ANDY CASTILLO

The influence that an artist exerts on another is unpredictable, but recognizable. Much is known about the influence exerted by a father over his child. What is less known is the influence from a child over his father’s painting, even if it has been a repeated phenomenon in the history of art. Such is the case of Daniel and Andy Castillo, son and father. The influence of Daniel over the work of Andy has been indelible; as much as the contours, the line fluidity, as the washes and brush strokes.

We know, as said by Rolando Barthes, that style has a biological origin. Therefore, between Daniel and his Father Andy there must be a stylistic closeness because of their biological proximity, but mostly because of the affectionate relationship between Father and Son. The love between them is so strong that their imaginary expression ineffably unites them in the imaginary quest in which both of them are the same. The result of this quest is an unparalleled work.

Remembering Picasso, who once said, “All children are born as artists. The problem is on how to continue to be artists while growing up”, We believe that Andy noticed that his son was a natural born artist that was born in a convenient place to develop his artistic ability. That is why, having exhausted so many academic studies in fine arts, the father finds in his son the best source to feed upon and enrich his work. This way Andy might obtain in his youth what took Picasso all of his life, or 80 years.

“Learning how to paint as the Renaissance painters took me a few years; painting like a child took me a life time”.

The similarity of Andy’s palette with his son has configured an imaginary world between them, where portraits of trees, fish, animals etc abound. The child Daniel can jump from a palette of grey tones to a palette of vivid tones. Green and orange tones express sadness and joy.

They sit side by side to determine what they see or figure in a group of lines and traces. The simplest sketch directs them through a path in which the realization of art reaches the satisfaction of the soul, in a type of game in which love becomes art. In this way they complete, beside Silvio Rodriguez, that chorus that says: “Only love turns clay into miracles. Only love engenders marvel”.                                                                           

The Tri-State Art and Music Festival



The festival will bring artists, artisans, poets and musicians from New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia to the Monroe Center for the Arts.Curated and promoted by Lynda Smith, the Tri State Festival has been held annually for the last five years with great crowd participation.

Admission is free and so is parking.

This is a final special announcement for those artists within the New Jersey area.

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the annual JC Open Artists Studio Tour held at Art House Productions curated by Artmeme with artwork remaining on display for two weeks.

"Elements" is the theme and we are looking to combine an array of artists featuring original artworks in the form of: paintings (oil, water color, acrylic, etc.) drawings, mixed media, photography, graphic design, illustration, multimedia and demo art. Artists invite you to discover and view elements used such as: lines, shapes, form, space, texture, value and color. Bringing together various fundamentals creates a feeling of balance, understanding, peace and appreciation.

"Elements" is a two weeklong event beginning with a Sneak Peak Art Party on October 11th and a closing reception on October 25th. We will notify accepted artists on July 25th so submit NOW! Please note accepted artists will need to sign a release of liability form.

Mary Benson Gallery Presents “A Month of Shotguns”
Weekly rotating exhibitions through the month of September, in Jersey City.

A Shotgun show is a special exhibition that takes place one night at a specific location.

The month of September will host a rotating series of one day art exhibitions at Jersey City’s
Mary Benson Gallery located at 369 Third St, Jersey City, NJ. Opening reception for “A Month
of Shotguns”  is scheduled for Saturday September 1st, 2012 and will highlight the art of Dorian Monsalve, Michael Greeley and Adam Carsons.

Week 1 artists include, Michael Greeley, a Newark area artist who has been taking his own
special brand of art and music through the continental united States. Artist Dorian Monsalve
is a family man whose “Scratch method” allows images to come out from behind the paint. A
recent participant of the 2012 Digable Arts Festival with Adam Carsons: Adam and Roland have known each other for a few years,
his art is garnering attention in certain circles and is ready to
participate in his first public exhibition.
