Giant carbon footprints
on discarded refrigerators pose the question of the human impact on earth.

Refrigeration representing in an iconic way a historical shift in life style and habits
for industry and households worldwide.
Refrigeration created a huge shift in food distribution, warehousing and transportation.

Uta Brauser's installation asks the viewer to bring  our (human) energy demands, decisions and needs in perspective with our place on the globe.

The exhibit opens in Jersey City NJ  on Grove street (Creative Grove artist market) part of JC Fridays, Grove street PATH plaza, on June 1, 2012, 3-11 pm.

It travels to  Bushwick Open Studios (BOS)June 2, 3 on Bogart and Grattan, Bushwick, Brooklyn NYC  10 am - 7 pm both days

The exhibit will revisit Grove street on June 8, 2012

Art Installation: Giant carbon footprint by Uta Brauser. Giant footprints are placed on throw-away refrigerators and discarded TV sets to remind us of our energy behaviors and impact on Earth, bring the viewer to a historical context of the development of energy needs and consumption.

The artist markets offers visual art by community based artists, designer T-shirts, independent fashion, locally created jewelry, innovative recycling, paper designs, candles, dog products, metal and leatherworks.

Manhattan-based Jazz drummer Karl Latham will lead his band in a tribute to jazz guitar legend Wes Montgomery to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Hudson County at Michael Anthony’s Restaurant, on the waterfront in Jersey City, Thursday, June 28, 2012. The show will also fe...ature Jordan Piper, a local pianist and composer, who will lead his own band to start the evening off. And, Jack Silbert, sporting his incredibly stylish red jacket, will emcee the event.

Doors will open at 7pm, with the first performance starting at 8:00pm – so there will be plenty of time to relax and catch dinner ahead of the show. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 the day of the show (there will be a limited number of tickets available at $20 until May 26), and there will be a cash bar. All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Hudson County. PADNA ALERT – City poised to sell out yet again to Lloyd Goldman, eliminate MORE affordable housing in the PAD

In a shocking move, Jersey City’s legal team is asking the City Council (on one day’s notice) to amend a previous legal settlement that had required units of affordable housing on development proposed at 110 and 111 First Street in the Powerhouse Arts District.

These two properties have been bitterly disputed.  The location of two former warehouses, one of which housed an artists enclave until 2005, the city sued Goldman to keep him from tearing down the warehouse that housed the artists, saying it was a historic structure that should be preserved.  In what many consider to be a very one-sided settlement, the City agreed to let Goldman raze the warehouse and artist housing, and re-develop the property as a high rise, in exchange for 25 units of affordable housing to be built on the properties, and other concessions.

Yesterday, Corporation Counsel Bill Matsikoudis proposed that the settlement be amended such that Goldman could make a $2.5 million contribution to the city’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund, so that affordable units could be built not on his property but elsewhere in the city.  PADNA strongly opposes further capitulation to this developer.

PADNA supports affordable housing ON SITE and IN the district, in accordance with the PAD Redevelopment Plan.   PADNA strongly believes that the PAD Plan as written is viable zoning for the district, as evidenced by the existing rehabilitated properties and new construction, as well as planned development.

Please attend the City Council meeting tomorrow to voice your objection to further gutting of the PAD Redevelopment Plan.  The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 280 Grove St.

111 first street controversy

The City Council will vote tomorrow on the request by Lloyd Goldman to permit him to make a 2.5 million dollar contribution to the Affordable Housing Fund in lieu
of providing  25 units for affordable housing for artists  in his new construction at 110 and 111 Washington Street  in  the Powerhouse Artist District. So the Arts District is to be in name only?
He tore down an historic warehouse which housed dozens of artists, galleries and a vital arts community - the core of the future Arts District. The city required him  ( and all others building in the
district) to provide a percent of their new units as affordable housing for artists. Now the City Council is considering a request to gut this requirement . I understand that the money offered is

significant and the need for affordable housing is city-wide. However, the Arts are a very important economic, cultural and unifying element of pride in a city. The second largest city in New Jersey
now has no art museum. Are we going to destroy the nascent Arts District as well? Building a theater is wonderful. But an ARTS DISTRICT must have ARTISTS!!!

Please vote against this request to amend the current agreement.

About "Christopher and His Kind" at Chillfest –

Handsome Matt Smith (the U.K.'s latest Dr. Who) plays the young author Christopher Isherwood ("The Berlin Stories") in this BBC-produced biopic which beautifully captures his relationships with his friend and occasional lover, the poet W.H. Auden, flatmate Jean Ross (Isherwood's real life friend and the basis for his character Sally Bowles immortalized in the film "Cabaret") and the Jewish, upper class Wilfrid Landauer (Iddo Goldberg, "Secret Diary Of A Call Girl").  To Isherwood's reserved English sensibility, the city's thriving gay subculture is thrilling and intoxicating. But Christopher soon finds himself heartbroken after the failure of a hopeless love affair, and so sets out on a process of self-discovery as he forges an identity and place for himself amidst the chaos and decadence of 1930s Berlin.

Chillfest presents gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender-themed films to Jersey City and the region, and is a sponsored project of New York Foundation for the Arts, a 501(c)(3) organization.

Riverview Neighborhood Association meeting

Volunteer Power!

In January, RNA created three committees based on the interests members identified during our strategic planning session: Taste of the Heights (TOTH) our social/outreach committee, the Business Committee which is reaching out to the local business community to identify ways we can better support each other, and the Cleanup Committee which is working hard on initiatives that will spruce up the neighborhood and help change the culture of litter here.

At this month's meeting, you will have an opportunity to hear from each committee about the amazing achievements they have had so far and better understand their volunteer needs going forward. Just some highlights from their first four months in existence:
TOTH: Superbowl Party, JC Fridays support, Meet up at Amalfi's after the Big Spring Cleanup
Business Committee - personal outreach to dozens of businesses along Palisade and Central Ave (and others in between!) and held its first forum with these businesses.
Cleanup Committee - participated in the cleanup of Mountain Road and the six Spring Into Action cleanups throughout the Heights, and helped plan and manage the Big Spring Cleanup, where we created a JCIA outpost right in Riverview Park (see below).
Their efforts have made a huge impact and we thank them. Come to the meeting on May 8th at 7:30PM at the Harbor View Health Center (178 Ogden at Franklin) and get to know the amazing individuals who are making it happen. In keeping with our 2012 theme of taking small steps that make a big difference, please bring a non-perishable food item for donation to St. Lucy's Shelter.

Riverview Farmers Market

The Riverview Farmers Market is Back!

The second season of the Riverview Farmers Market begins this Sunday, May 6th at 9AM in Riverview-Fisk Park (Palisade Ave bet. Griffith & Bowers) RNA is honored to be a sponsor of the market which is run by Farms in the City Heights. The market will be open each Sunday from May through October from 9:00am to 2:00pm. There will be a lot of special activities this week for the opening so please come out and support the market.

Your favorite food vendors from last season will be returning along with a few new ones. The vendors include Alstede Farms, Made with Love, Nature's Own, Saucy Sara's Salsa, Sassy Sweet Treats, Senor Snacks, Stella's Empanadas, and Vesco Foods (got a love those pickles). There are also some great non-food vendors to check out in the coming weeks--knife sharpening anyone? And Not Yo Mama's Crafts Fair will be at the market on July 1 and October 21st, so save those dates!

RNA will have a table at the market and we are again seeking volunteers to tend to it. Volunteering is easy and it is a great opportunity to meet people. To volunteer please email riverviewneighborhood@comcast.net.

exploring faerie-lands art opening

As artists we often delve into the realms of imagination, exploring the mythologies that permeate human culture. We cross boundaries into other worlds within or own minds, creating artwork to invite the viewer to share our visions. Humanity has been creating Faerielands from the very beginning. We have a need to explain the unknown. Even now, when most of us have a better understanding of the workings of the universe, these imaginary tales still have a powerful hold on us. We WANT to believe there is something dark lurking in the woods, we WANT to believe that a mirror can be a passage to another world, we WANT to believe there are spirits in the trees, we WANT to believe we can fly if only we believe hard enough, we WANT to believe in Faeries, Imps, Succubae, Gnomes, Elves, Mermaids... This exhibition includes work that expresses this exploration of humanity’s need to create stories of mysterious other worlds that intersect our own. Some are literal, others more interpretive.
