writer's seminar week 4: sound and sensibility

At the heart of much great writing is the balance between “sound and sense,” Alexander Pope told us—and in this session we will see how good prosody (meter and rhymes in a proscribed order) will, like the lyrics of a song, elevate the sentiments you want to convey. This discussion will focus primarily on poetry; poets discussed will include W.H. Auden, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and John Donne. Participants are also encouraged to ...bring in and share poems they have written.

writer´s seminar week 3, " the beautiful sentence"

This talk will set out to create an appreciation for sentence architecture—necessarily in prose, though we will also discuss lines of poetry that accomplish a similar end. How important is that first sentence in a short story, really? What sets a great sentence apart from a merely good one? Through textual analysis of authors from Gertrude Stein to Jonathan Lethem, and an in-session exercise, we will attempt to turn a plain stat...ement into a piece of art.

public meeting powerhouse arts district, TDR

Invitation to Attend Public Meeting Regarding the Powerhouse Arts District and Transfer of Development Rights Members of the board of PADNA were invited recently to attend a session hosted by the Jersey City Division of City Planning regarding Smart Growth development tools to manage growth in Jersey City.  The Division of Planning has received a grant from the NJ Office of Smart Growth to conduct a comprehensive planning study to compose a Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) Ordinance for Jersey City.  Through this process, the City can explore ways to secure funding to preserve and enhance community resources by capitalizing on the demand for development.  This will be the first urban application of this zoning in New Jersey. A public meeting on this topic will be held at City Hall on Thursday, August 26th from 6pm to 9pm.  We urge PAD residents to attend this meeting to learn more about this concept and its application, make suggestions and provide community feedback.  In the meantime, here is a quick primer based on the meeting we attended: What is TDR? Transfer of Developments Rights, or "TDR", is a voluntary land-use management tool that allows municipalities and regions to achieve both land conservation and economic growth through the transfer of development potential from one area ("preservation area") to another ("growth area").  Put another way, unused development rights (additional floors, unused square footage permitted by zoning) can be sold by one property (sender) to another (receiver) under city sponsorship. I still don't get it.  Can you give an example? The concept of TDR is that potential development rights are "sent" to another property in the city, and the "receiving" owner of that other property gets "credit" allowing him/her the right to build more densely than zoning would otherwise allow in an area that needs "growth."  For this privilege, the "receiving" owner compensates the owner of the "sending" property a certain monetary fee.  The "sending" property is then obligated to preserve their building and invest a certain amount in maintaining it. Would use of TDR make any changes to the overall PAD Redevelopment Plan? No.  The ability to use this tool would be adopted as an Ordinance for the whole of Jersey City.  It would have no impact on current or future zoning.   What properties in the PAD could be eligible for this program? Not all properties in the PAD would work with TDR.  Essentially any project that is already approved is off the table.  That means that the Toll Brothers properties, Harbor Lights, Morgan Pointe, etc. would not be properties where TDR would be applied. Where this could be of value is in preserving historically valuable properties which have not yet been, or are only partially rehabilitated.  TDR is a tool to compensate those owners for preserving their properties. Would TDR be mandatory for properties in the PAD? No. The program is entirely optional for building owners to participate in. Where would these development rights be "sent" to? This is one of the topics for discussion at the meeting on August 26th at City Hall. The City has some ideas, and the ones we discussed in our meeting are all local downtown areas.  In particular, Gregory Park is an area of focus. Gregory Park consists of the high rises and surface parking lots between Columbus Drive and Montgomery Streets.  The current zoning on those lots dates from the 70s and actually restricts them from building any more to fill in with additional housing or retail.   The Planning Department sees TDR as an opportunity to modernize the area.  NOTE: Per the City, affordable housing requirements in Gregory Park would be unaffected by any TDR activities. Want to learn more? If you are interested in getting more information ahead of the meeting on the 26th, there is another public meeting to discuss TDR as it relates to the Jersey Avenue Redevelopment area (this is roughly the border area between Jersey City and Hoboken just past the Holland Tunnel).  That meeting will be held TONIGHT August 19, 2010 from 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm  at the Golden Door Charter School [180 9th Street].

In 1978, the struggle came to a head when San Francisco's progressive Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk—one of the first openly gay elected officials anywhere—were murdered in cold blood by Dan White, a former City Supervisor, fireman, and police officer.

The community's response—ranging from silent vigil to violent riots—helped define gay politics as we know it. THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK tells an emotional story of communities in conflict, centered on the last year of Harvey Milk's life.

The Chillfest Second Sunday Series runs monthly from October through June 2010 and offers gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender-themed films to Jersey City and the region.

4th Street Arts & Music will host a variety of musical acts from New Jersey and New York as they compete at the Last Band Standing, a battle of the bands event, at Parlay Studios Sunday, Aug. 22., 2 -6 pm

Eight acts will compete in a bracketed musical tournament consisting of three competitive rounds. All participants will be voted on by a panel of judges and by the audience at the end of each round. At the end of the evening, prizes will be awarded to the winning bands.

Admission to Last Band Standing will be $5 at the door, with home cooked food and drinks available upon entry. This event is also a fundraiser for the 4th Street Art and Music Festival taking place in Jersey City Sat, Oct. 2.

Some of the participating bands include:
In Musth, Big Boss, Los Huevos, Easter Vomit, Plastiq Passion, Prison Pretty, Shayfer James and more TBA.

The judges include:
Eddie Applebaum from The Greenhouse – A music manager for over 12 years, Eddie has worked with some of the most popular rock bands of our generation, including LIVE, Sunny Day Real Estate, Local H, Morningwood, Tracy Bonham, Strangefolk, Earl Greyhound, The Bravery among others. Eddie has achieved much success in the last few years, especially in the realm of music licensing, where he has done over 150 placements for his bands' music, including 4 national commercial campaigns, over 30 network TV shows, 20+ video games, and a long list of feature films, most notably the placement of Morningwood's track "New York Girls" in the film Sex & The City: The Movie.

Anthony Fantano from The Needle Drop – A public radio host, contributor to NPR Music's Song of the Day, and music editor for Scene Magazine. He started the music blog the Needle Drop in 2007, and has been growing a YouTube audience with his eccentric music reviews since 2009. When he's not listening to music, he's talking about it, dreaming about it, and making it. Hence, he is the Internet's busiest music nerd.

"Pistol" Pete Kaufmann from RockinLifeStyle – A professional musician, writer, and motivational speaker has toured America as drummer for Amandla- led by Claude Coleman Jr. of Ween, aso contributes as a writer for Modern Drummer Magazine, and is the owner of Rockin Lifestyle- a motivation company dedicated to creative people and creative living.

Lindsay Klein – With many TV/Film appearances including : MTV's "Singled Out", Comedy Central's "Strangers With Candy" and "Upright Citizens Brigade", HBO's "The Sopranos", feature films such as "Finding Forrester" and "Center Stage", and various indie films including "Home Sweet Hoboken" starring Ben Gazzara, Lindsay has been part of the entertainment industry for some time. After interning for the Howard Stern Show, Lindsay Klein found her ultimate niche, radio. Currently the Nightspace DJ on WDHA 105.5FM rock, Lindsay's show is on 7pm-midnight Monday thru Friday and includes her very own "Homegrown Spotlight" where she plays a local artist once a night. Jersey City Cultural Affairs and Pro Arts have joined together with JCM for a fun night of socializing, networking and acquiring information about the upcoming Jersey City Artists’ Studio Tour.
