Public Library August program listings

For children, the operative word at the Library is fun! The Bonetti Children’s Room at the Main Library and theCunningham Branch will be hosting a program by Cherese Bracey, who will be reading from his book, Story Time Friends!, accompanied by her storybook character, Reesie Reader. Cherese Bracey appeared at the Library’s 2011 book festival. Her biography from the festival program appears below:

Cherese Bracey is a devout Christian, early childhood educator, entrepreneur & author. Together with her brother and husband, she began a small family based company, Morris & Bracey Entertainment that is geared toward children’s entertainment, spiritual novels, & community outreach. She started her career in childcare at the age of 19 working at a childcare center that provided a learning environment for children in need. It was during this experience when she realized her desire to become a role model for children with a strong focus on those who came from hurting backgrounds and tough times. She discovered that children who are less fortunate need positive individuals to pattern after, and that love and laughter are ingredients for healthy emotions. During her career in teaching, Cherese discovered she had a gift for encouraging children to become the best they could be by expressing the importance of staying positive and loving to read. During her childhood, she would use books as a comfort tool through stressful times and has used this example in her life which has since given birth to early literacy advocates, Reesie Reader & Bookie. (Xlibris)

In philosophy, multiplicity can be defined as the multi-faceted nature of reality. The writer Italo Calvino described the concept of multiplicity in literature as seeing the world as a system of systems.

In our MULTIPLICITIES exhibition, this summer, our Drawing Rooms’ walls will be
covered with engaging systems of numerous, various and re-occurring aspects;
arrangements of multiple shape, form, color and image.
Building with both simple and complex graphic forms through repetition and variation, pattern and contrast, each artist creates a cohesive vision expressive of their own perspective, yet
enveloping the viewer in new experience.

A time in arcadia, exhibit at Curious Matter

A Time in Arcadia

May 19 to June 23, 2013
Presented by Curious Matter & The Jersey City Free Public Library – a special collaboration featuring work by 33 contemporary artists and a bibliography of nearly 200 selections from the Main Library’s 6 Departments and 9 Branches.
“Is not thilke the mery moneth of May,
When loue lads masken in fresh aray?
How falles it then, we no merrier bene,
Ylike as others, girt in gawdy greene?
Our bloncket liueryes bene all to sadde,
For thilke same season, when all is ycladd
With pleasaunce: the grownd with grasse, the Wods
With greene leaues, the bushes with bloosming Buds.
Yougthes folke now flocken in euery where,
To gather may bus-kets and smelling brere:
And home they hasten the postes to dight,
And all the Kirke pillours eare day light,
With Hawthorne buds, and swete Eglantine,
And girlonds of roses and Sopps in wine.
Such merimake holy Saints doth queme,
But we here sytten as drownd in a dreme.”

EDMOND SPENCER
A SHEPERD’S CALENDAR, 1579

We dream of Arcadia. Whether it’s called Eden or Shangri-la, we long for a verdant and fecund place where food comes without toil and peace fills our days. Some cultures have taken a more proactive approach to attaining this dream and set aside land to build their own Arcadias. Persian paradise gardens and the Italian Renaissance Mannerist gardens were attempts, by those with the means, to create a place separate from the dreary drudgeries of life. Extravagant fountains and statuary complemented clipped hedges and trellised vines, all surrounded by a wall to protect the sanctuary.

Not all gardens were so grand and ornamental. Medieval monastery gardens could be intimate in scale and cultivated solely for food and medicinals. The plants themselves being the most vital component. For most life on Earth, plants are the base of the food chain. Their importance is nearly absolute. Relying upon the plentiful light of the sun for survival, plants create their own food. Often they produce more than they need at any one time. These stored reserves feed the rest of life on Earth. Roots, stems, leaves, seeds and fruit are all exploited by the diversity of living things to obtain their own nourishment for survival.

J City Theater call for theater production participants

We here at J CITY Theater, continue to recover from Hurricane Sandy.  We had hoped to be able to see you this Spring - but many factors led us to make the hard decision that continued recovery was needed.  Our standards for excellence are very high - and when we feel that we can't meet them - it is better to wait.
That being said, we are using this rare down time to build a stronger foundation.  J CITY  has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years and it is time to expand our team to grow along with our audiences.
Over the summer we will be looking for people who are in love with theater and want to participate in this exciting time of renewal.  Open positions are:
Technical Director
Lighting designer
Publicity Director
Community Development Expert
Volunteer Coordinator
Stage Manager
Also - we are looking for Board Members - those who would be interested in having a greater investment in the growth and success of J CITY.  So please get in touch with us if you want to be a part of our exciting coming season.
We'll be back!

Creative gym Grove

Creative Grove, JCs outdoor art scene,
the situation on  May 24:
Creative Grove has a girl Deejay:  Alexis Fair with deep, funky, tech house music,
the band Pilot Jones will rock the plaza at 7pm with their groovy punky rock homegrown from Jersey City.
facebook.com/pages/PILOT-JONES

Alexis' musical journey began at age 7, when she began, singing in choirs, playing the flute, and playing her favorite instrument, the piano at age 9. Her interest in electronic/ dance music arose in her early teens, but she chose to pursue training in the arts to broaden her horizons.

In September of 2007, however, Alexis returned to her musical roots and began to pursue her DJ career more seriously; landing her gigs at Pacha (NYC), Love (NYC), Sullivan Room (NYC), Deko Lounge (NJ), 46 Lounge (NJ), Winter Music Conference (Miami) and many other venues, parties, and events in NY and NJ.

She is dedicated to playing music she truly believes in, enjoys, and perfecting her technique.

When it comes to DJing she is new to the House music scene but shows great promise, due to her well-rounded taste in different genres of music, eclectic blend of training, and innate knowledge of what moves the crowd.  Most importantly, her love for both the music and the people let her generate from the turntables a new and powerful experience.
